The problem isn't necessarily that the employee expects to want to leave in under a year, so much as they don't want the company to have an incentive to let them go in under a year.

Sure, there are always other options. But there's also inertia - switching jobs is stressful and risky. Forcing people back to the office provides a push that might get people to think, "Y'know what, maybe <competitor>

I disagree. Most of S5 so far has been personal stories, not space opera. I'm still finding it entertaining, but I wouldn't recommend the show to anyone on the basis of season 5.
