The thing that baffles me is that even in the present day, (some) graphic designers are still trying to create web sites using a different medium than the end product. Sure, back in 2005 that was the norm, but it’s like nothing has changed

I feel like I regularly see similar comments, touting the superiority of Chrome devtools. I haven’t used Chrome in a few years; what do they have that others don’t?

AFAIK one of the best solutions for smartphone privacy is using a custom Android ROM without Google apps installed. Of course that means basically no 3rd party apps, but you can still get a surprising amount of functionality with just a web

Your experience mirrors mine, almost exactly. One other advantage of HipChat was that it‘s native Android client would run without requiring Play Services; Slack purposefully won't run without it.

Unsurprising. When I was using an Android phone with Firefox, Google search always served me the “bare bones” degraded layout; changing the UA got me the same content as Chrome.

Extensions. On my Android phone I run LineageOS without gapps. I don’t install 3rd party applications, simply because the majority (in my experience) try to abuse your device in spite of limitations put in place by Apple/Google.

> Do you know how to find out what a given drug will cost with insurance? Theoretically your insurer should provide that via some sort of online portal, but in my experience the usability of such tools has always been terrible.

Thanks for the recommendation. I’m grudgingly considering a Win10 install for gaming, and the mandatory telemetry is a hard pill to swallow.

IIRC in previous versions of iOS, a Bluetooth icon would be visible when enabled. After reading the article, I thought, “Well, my Bluetooth is off.” But it sure wasn’t.

I did a mini-ITX build last year with a 2400G inside an InWin Chopin case ( https://www.in-win.com/en/gaming-chassis/Chopin ). Definitely not as small as an Intel NUC, but it's also a lot more powerful. It can

Totally agree. However, one major selling point of Steam for me is the practically seamless Proton compatibility layer (while acknowledging the philosophical disconnect between running Linux and buying DRM'd games...)

Google’s behavior RE: Android licensing is more similar to Microsoft/Windows than you might think, from what I understand.

The difference is that Google has a near-monopoly in search. Amazon is a behemoth, but there are plenty of alternatives.

I think this is the way to go for the value-conscious Apple fan. It used to be that you could buy a base model and then upgrade it later. Since everything is soldered nowadays, buying used or previous-gen will get you pretty much the same c

Exactly. I thought I wanted to make games professionally for a long time, then realized that I'd just be a cog in the machine if I worked for a large company.

I feel like this thread is as good a place as any to gush about Sony's hardware design. I opened up my Z5 Compact recently to replace the camera flash and audio jack, and was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to disassemble. Remo

I would argue that an Android phone without Google apps (e.g. LineageOS) is just as good; perhaps even superior, as you don't have to rely on an arbitrary gatekeeper in order to install software.
