I don't see how your comment is relevant to the topic. This isn't a public vs private debate. If anything it's a debate between federal loans and state appropriations, or an issue of administrative mismanagement. There is a

That's definitely true too. Being able to accurately assess whether that need will ever exist (or not) early on is invaluable.

This is a very good point. I think many people are so caught up in bashing the hype train around big data and data science that they just casually dismiss these incredibly valid points. It's not necessarily about how big your data is

I once saw someone propose an 'X-prize' style system of publicly funded incentive based competitions for medical device and pharma research. Interesting idea.

This is not a market failure, it's a regulatory failure. The FDA has arbitrarily denied approval to alternative epinephrine delivery mechanisms and in doing so cemented Mylan's pricing monopoly. When the father of Mylan's C

Sure, but not really what I meant. Adding public option and subtracting individual mandate would basically be a step towards having single payer with secondary private market.

Much of computer science is a science. The contention seems to comes from the fact that software engineers tend to come from computer science departments. Maybe more universities should create separate software engineering departments?

Independent of the presence or absence of a public option, the benefits of a private market largely depend on whether an actual competetive market with consumer choice and pricing comparison can exist. In the US it cannot due to regulatory

I agree with your overall point and particularly the first part. Computational biologists and laboratory biologists are both biologists, just with different tool sets. I disagree, however, with your last paragraph - in particular the notio

The problem with programs like these is that they tend to incentivize nefarious "scavenging" of lower hanging fruit such as bikes and other private property. The type of supervised work described in this article seems like a mu
