For sure, but did you start learning to program by using unit tests? "Use unit tests" is great advice for a developer shipping commercial software, and bad advice for a 13 year old who wants to learn to code.

1. Natural selection has nothing to do the question. This is an issue of culture, not of genetics. You could easily have a situation where we globally had declining birthrate. The interesting question is - why are birth rates for these po

Generally good advice, but I disagree with #9 (avoid debuggers, learn to unit test). Unit testing is important perhaps if you have a large project with many contributors, but no good hackers I know learned to program with testing and "Best

This usage is very popular around jtv. We commonly refer to people who live a more standard lifestyle as "real people".

There are systematic environmental differences for different cultures as well. This isn't to say "people aren't different", but rather that until you've estimated environmental differences and gene-environment interactions you know almost n

I've posted this at least three times on Hacker News, but I'm just shocked people haven't read it: http://cscs.umich.edu/~crshalizi/weblog/520.html This guy is a statistics professor, and has a lot to say about exactly what "g" is. He eve

Perhaps I misunderstand you, but isn't the opposite true? Presumably you would target PHP with the compiler for the same reason many people target C: it's a fairly universal language, supported on many platforms. A Ruby => PHP compiler

We haven't had many people show up in suits to interviews at Justin.tv, but it's a reasonably accurate indicator of failure. I try not to prejudge, but there's only so many times you can see a correlation and not start to stereotype.

It depends on the person. I went through the series in highschool, but many (most?) people do it in college and some never get through it at all.

I constantly find myself wanting to downvote specific stories. My only other choice is to upvote everything around it, which isn't what I really mean to do.

Neither PHP nor Python have anything approaching CPAN. Ruby is slightly closer with Gems, but even that's a joke compared to the might of Perl libraries. Seriously, that's the big thing that's missing. Other than that both PHP and Python ar

You're basically saying you think the stocks are mispriced significantly. If that's true, there's a huge opportunity to buy Y! and sell MS, and you'll make a killing. Why aren't you taking it?

I found this essay ( http://cscs.umich.edu/~crshalizi/weblog/520.html ) very helpful in understanding what "heritability" really means, and why it's so hard to control studies like this. The short version is: think about how heritable som

Facebook and flickr seem to be about equivalently efficient; Facebook is about 10x bigger and uses about 10x as many servers. Fotolog seems much more efficient than either though; it's about the same size as flickr, but uses only 1/3 as man
