Restitution can indeed be part of a criminal suit. However, copyright cases are generally not tried as criminal suits; they're RIAA vs. Joe Schmoe. Thievery cases are tried as criminal cases. Different standards are applied in each case.

You're obviously not working at companies dominated by engineering (cough, Justin.tv, cough).

If the grocer was suing the thief in civil court for restitution, that's exactly the kind of calculation the court would have to do. However, in our court system, thieves are generally tried in criminal court, not sued for restitution. Th

From later in the article: "Mr. Aso’s comment would have stayed inside the room had a political reporter not been eavesdropping at the door — a common practice in Japan." Is this really common? It brings to mind a pretty hilarious image.

Why do you tip at restaurants? Because it's the socially responsible thing to do. This allows a similar social enforcement mechanism to start improving the environment. That's a good thing, and much better than the alternative of government

There's certainly that argument to be had, as to whether reducing carbon emissions is a worthwhile goal at all. If it's not, CO2stats is clearly worthless. However, many many people (including myself) believe that it's a real problem that w

While it would be interesting to compare online access to offline access, CO2stats is providing a service that could really change things moving forward. You can't buy carbon credits from Blockbuster for the total cost of shopping there; CO

Ad companies would probably like that anyway...they wouldn't be wasting their money advertising to people who were not interested in their ads.

Just another anecdote, but I never found that pressure existed in college. In fact, heterodox "surprising" papers tended to do better than average.

I find the opposite is true. At a big company I could always tell myself "In the end, you're not making the decisions. It's not on your head if it doesn't work". Working at a startup, either I succeed or I fail, but there aren't any excuses

I've seen it before. Sometimes it's actually not bad at all (person A takes over posting to person B's mailing list), and sometimes it's horrible (selling the email addresses for your webapp to spammers).

There are two possibilities when you pick door 1: either you've picked a door with the prize behind it (33%) or you've picked a door with a goat behind it (67%). Assume you stick. In that case, you have a 33% chance you've picked the right

Presume for a moment that you believe global warm is a real and present danger. Then a carbon tax makes perfect sense. I agree if you think that global warming is uncertain, or that perhaps we actually want to increase CO2 in the atmosphere

What makes you think I'd be against externalities taxes on all of the above? I think it makes much more sense to tax those things, which we don't want more of in our society, rather than say capital gains, which we do want.

You wouldn't have the 1,000 paying customers without the 1,000,000 eyeballs to get them with then. It's not like it costs Weebly much to run those websites, and they essentially act as free SEO for their pay service.

It depends. Sometimes it's just mothballed/destroyed. Sometimes the acquirer keeps running the service as-is (that's what happened with kiko.com). Sometimes the user data is sold off to the highest bidder.

I don't think that's so. For example, a tax on fossil fuels based on carbon output would be simple and easy to enforce (importer/extracter pays the tax). It would cause all goods to reflect their true carbon cost. Why would that be worse th

Speaking as someone who owns a .tv, anything other than .com is just a bad idea. People just don't understand there are things other than .com.

I like backtype, but searching for "justin.tv" gives it fits. It keeps giving me things about random "Justin"s, or about "TV"s, which is not what I'm looking for.

I track conversations I'm involved in through the Threads link at the top (which is quite useful). I'd like to be able to have a one click add-this-conversation-I'm-not-involved-in-to-my-Threads-list button. 1 point by emmett 1 hour ago | l
