First - great collection of links. The history of slavery deserves a more thorough understanding than what's normally taught in high school. And yet, it was not the Irish who couldn't vote as late as the 60s, nor were the Irish the ones in

Your product is great, I wish I'd had it when I was studying Chinese in college. It's a great refresher now too.

It's not technically infeasible; we've built a tech demo of it as well. It's a political problem - Apple won't approve your app.

Claiming this is the "Chinese way" is stereotyping a country of 1 billion people from the actions of a very few. Going further and suggesting we boycott/avoid Chinese products is protectionism motivated by misguided xenophobia, rather than

Because you can't stream live video to or from the iPhone over 3G yet, and it only works for h264, so it's fairly pointless. The existing apps are pretty much crap because of Apple restrictions. We're ready to pounce if and when we think it

We built this in about 3 days of work on top of the Justin.tv platform, I'd be curious to hear what the HN community thinks about it. I've set up an invite code so you all can try it out.

The most striking thing about this list is just how many more startups have been funded by YC than by any competitor. There are almost as many YC companies as the rest put together (especially considering all the unlaunched YC companies m

Neither - we were a special case; we'd already done Kiko Calendar as part of the Summer 05 cohort, and this was our second company.

From personal experience: Kiko had a website at http://kiko.com , although apparently it's been recently taken down by the acquirer. We sold it on eBay for $258,000 in the summer of 06. We took follow-on funding from two angels (of a very

"Insider Trading", as a crime, has a very specific definition: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Insider_trading#Definition_of_.... It's not merely trading on things other people don't know.

Yes, I expected Kiko to look much more like how Justin.tv has turned out. Whoops!

Justin.tv. Who would have guessed that 2.5 years after putting a camera on Justin's head, we'd still be going strong? I was really expecting more of a blaze of glory followed by immediate failure, not a sustainable business.

I completely agree there's nothing simple about that, but ever since we switched from Slony-I to Londiste at Justin.tv I couldn't be happier. It's been completely bulletproof, recovers from errors easily, and makes schema upgrades a breeze.

I understand your sentiment, but you're wrong. We need lawyers who will work even for despicable clients. The reason for this rule is that everyone is entitled to legal representation they can trust. The clients really are at fault here.

Reading books is mostly something you do for entertainment, like going to the movies, or eating nice food. There's nothing wrong with that! It's very pleasurable, and occasionally useful. But generally most reading doesn't make you a better

You can almost always talk to lawyers for free, on an initial consultation. They're happy to talk to you in exchange for the opportunity to get your business. That will yield enough information to figure out whether it's worth proceeding. T

In a couple different ways. EC2 is an amazing service, but it's not a perfect fit for everyone. We basically wanted to buy cheaper bandwidth and more bandwidth per CPU, and there's no real path for that on EC2.

For those of you who have young children or planning to have children, here is a suggestion: investigate just how many cellphones we carry around these days, and compare that to how many were around 25-30 years ago.
