A single example of twins who are similar proves nothing. I've personally met identical twins who couldn't be more unlike each other - which is no more evidence than the single case (case study, anecdote, they mean the same thing) you cite.

You're missing the point. Saying something is "heritable" is essentially meaningless. It tells you how that trait would change in the group measured in response to evolutionary selective pressure, and that's it . It doesn't tell you whethe

At which point you're down to n of 1-2 per group, because separated-at-birth twin studies commonly contain no more then 30-40 pairs of twins, and your study is fatally flawed. I'm not saying twin studies couldn't be done well, I'm saying

Why? The twins who were adopted were of the exact same race, gender, age, and appearance at the moment of adoption. People aren't just given a random child when they adopt, they choose. So you still haven't untangled selection effects entir

That's an anecdote, not a study. The criticism I leveled is at twin studies in general, not twin studies . Heritability is very specific measure, and it does not mean "genetic". Zip codes are highly heritable; number of arms is not heritabl

Psychologists love twin studies, but they're mostly worthless. The unstated assumption is always "A twin study holds genetics constant while randomizing the environment". Of course the families of two identical twins are far from independen

Generally you'd pay a bride price rather than a dowry in China ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_marriage#Six_Etiquette ). Sayings like the one you quoted are not due to paying money to the groom's family, but rather because the girl b

That's not true. You could have an arbitrary number of years that were colder in a row, with rising CO2 levels, and still have a world where CO2 causes a temperature rise. It would simply require a countervailing force that's stronger. The

Well, never. It's always an acceptable hypothesis, because maybe you haven't considered all the evidence yet. What if CO2 causes global warming exactly as scientists predict, but the Sun is going out? However, if your question is, would sev

You clearly did not read the article you're critiquing, because he spends screens and screens of text discussing exactly the difference between climate and weather. In short, climate is predicting that a candle will make the room warmer. We

There's no reason to believe any of these people are criminals. They've all been arrested, but that doesn't make them guilty! That's why this site is disturbing.

Ah, I see. I didn't understand what a course catalog was in this context. Maybe "Browse Courses", or place the link more centrally? Also, it should default to a few examples that are really awesome, not "Most Recent" which is full of garbag

As soon as I understood what you were offering (make your own courses online!) I wanted to browse example courses that had been released, and it wasn't obvious how to do that.

Definitely not. If your boxes are pegged at 100%, you have no spare capacity! The real question is, are you CPU constrained at peak capacity? And in the case of dynamic web apps, the answer is almost always yes. So CPU improvements are a hu

Social security has been raided to pay for the general fund for years. While nominally it goes "to your account", in practice it's a tax used to pay for things in the general fund just like income taxes are. I may have read the tax table wr
