Average number of messages sent (and received) by race/gender would be a good control for this study, I agree. That's a good point.

When it comes to sex , it's ok to discriminate on the basis of sex , because when it comes to sex the different sexes are very different. Their sexual characteristics are different, they produce different sex hormones , and they ev

One might even say, well-controlled correlation implies causation. That's what experiments are for!

Interesting to me: rate of reply seems inversely correlated with likelihood of reply. That is, if you're likely to reply, other people are less likely to reply to you. My guess is that both of these things are correlated with social status.

There's a clear difference between sex and race when it comes to, um, sex. Conflating the two doesn't make much sense in this instance.

Re point 3: Don't use Pound. Use HAProxy, it's superior along pretty much every dimension. The idea is right though :-).

Among other abilities, dogs can use "fast-mapping" to learn new words. They are very well adapted to learning commands from humans. https://ideotrope.org/index.pl?node_id=36839

Sorry, re-reading that it wasn't totally clear. The ModelClass.register_expiration_callback(keyname) has to be run at parse time , because there's no guarantee that the cache statement will ever be executed before a ModelClass instance is

I want to be able to write: cache(key_name, :ttl => 30.seconds, :dependent => ModelClass) do model.expensive_operation end and have that cache expire whenever any instance of ModelClass is updated. With macros, every

You say "porn is avidly pirated", as if that's a distinction that is unique to porn. Every single media type on the internet is avidly pirated, except the ones which are annoying to digitize like books - and even those more and more are pir

Having hacked a (poorly implemented, bug riddled) macro system into Ruby because I needed it, I can say with certainty that Ruby is not an acceptable Lisp. It just turns out that some of the (easiest) things you can use macros for can be

Why to be bothered: Because by strongly gendering arbitrary actions, you effectively do constrain people. You make it difficult for anyone to perform the action and still be considered masculine/feminine, when that action should have nothin

In my experience, the #1 attitude is required for academia - you want a fully general theory of Roast Heating, not a practical answer right now. The #2 and #3 attitudes make the best engineers - ideally you can switch between those two mode

Reading Rainbow was created via government intervention...I'm not sure that's a good example of how government should stay out of education. It seems like government can do a very good job of education sometimes!

Unemployment could be higher for men, and there could still be discrimination against women in the workplace. Those are not in contradiction. Your comment seems like a non sequitur. (Leaving aside whether there really is sex discrimination

I don't know the GraffitiGeo guys, but I really doubt they "stole" the name. I think we're seeing convergent evolution at work here - it's a logical combination of words to describe "leaving digital marks on the real world".

Why do you think Justin.tv is buying traffic? It's patently false, so I'm curious where you'd get the impression from.

China may not be democratic, but it's no evil empire. Boycotting Chinese products or freezing them out diplomatically won't fix corruption problems; in fact, it's likely to have the opposite effect. China has improved a great deal since Nix

I can see where you're coming from, but we've built up a lot of brand equity in the Justin.tv name now, with tons of people coming to the site, links, etc. For more and more people, it's just a name, like "Fox" or "Warner Brothers". Most pe
