It depends on whether your mental model is "applying a sequence of filters to a result set" or "editing attributes of a query". If the latter, you'd expect them to be equal and the opposite would be surprising. Just from the point of view o

We know what it costs to buy internet-only: you can buy internet from AT&T for $30/month if you get DSL. So it's unlikely that many people will opt into $145/month internet-only cable. Will the pricing go from $150/month to $10/month? A

It's possible that they will...but also possible that they won't. Given the evidence presented, we can't know. Has anyone done a followup study?

I am pretty sure this is false. While the overwhelming number of unique visitors to reddit are not logged in, those users are far less engaged than average. Logged in users make up a huge percentage of the pageviews because of their higher

14.3 million pageviews per day comes to 163 per second, on average. Reddit's traffic, like most sites of its kind, probably peaks during lunch hour during the workday and probably peaks at 5x that number. So we're looking at 815 pageviews p

I know the reddit guys, and I can tell you it's definitely not that. Hitting the DB is extremely rare - almost everything comes straight out of cache (either memcache, or memcachedb for caches which are more expensive to rebuild). Execution

Putting the "Share" button on every little page makes me never want to click it. You should only put it on really significant events that I might actually want to share. Also you didn't make a big deal when I leveled up, and I have no idea

The numbers cited in the post (as he points out) do not take into account all the antipoverty programs we have. When you take those into account you get a graph like this: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_djgssszshgM/SvtscpywvOI/AAAAAAAABD... Th

Very similar to the arguments of the Luddites: The power loom is putting workers out of a job! Some attempt to do something which gets the unemployed back to work could be good, but trying to create make-work by using more people than a job

Yelp can also put bad businesses out of business, and does. And it can make an already good business a success, which it also does. What evidence is there that they change the world net negative, rather than net positive? My experience with

For simple things like adding tables or adding columms, just do it. Add the column/table, then release new app code relying on it. For more complex things (changing the name of an existing column, or breaking a table into two parts, etc.) y

Yeah, me-too products are never really interesting. I mean, does the world really need another search engine? There's already Lycos and Altavista. Calling an internet startup's idea "me-too" is a pretty lame criticism. Most of the most succ

I don't really understand your problem fully, but if Mixpanel looks like a good fit I would recommend using them for your new data, and creating a separate system for viewing your historical data. That reduces the requirements for the code

Why do you think Yelp is actually erasing bad reviews? It seems most likely that this is sour grapes from business that are unhappy with poor reviews, rather than any wrongdoing on Yelp's part.

Quoth the author: In a very dynamic language like Ruby, open classes and method aliasing (e.g., alias_method_chain) mitigate this problem, but they don’t solve it. If you manipulate a class to add logging, all instances of that class will h
