We use HaXe at Justin.tv. It has some very nice points, but "code once, deploy everywhere" is ridiculous. So many of the crucial APIs are platform dependent that there is absolutely no way your HaXe application is going to be portable.

I think you may have reacted to what you thought he said here, rather than what he said. The management within a company (considered as a class, rather than as a singular entity "the company") does indeed bargain collectively with the worke

Links, please. I believe that rackspace servers are cheaper/more powerful per box, but an order of magnitude on both sides is absurd. What you are claiming is that $100/month on AWS would cost $1-2/month on SoftLayer. That's just not credib

Right, I think we're in agreement. VC backed companies are usually shooting for fast growth. If you hitch your wagon to a VC backed company, you might be getting in early on the very first Google ad buys when they were underpriced. Then aga

Companies don't spend through all their money because a VC makes them. Companies raise VC when they see the need to spend lots of money. The aspersion on all startups that have raised financing as likely to be unscrupulous and play fast and

That's pretty much the reason, yes. Justin.tv and TwitchTV are very similar, both technically and in terms of UI. Socialcam, while related, doesn't really share so much. It made more sense as a separate company.

Pretty much. Empirically, most startups with more than 3 founders collapse due to intra-founder strife. (Obviously there are exceptions. I am a co-founder of one of those exceptions, since Justin.tv has 4 founders. But it's a good rule.)

I'm hoping this is a situation where google hopes they'll lose but they'll force apple to argue public ally against ridiculous software patents. But this is probably giving Google too much credit.

So anyone who owns a whole-market stock index is prohibited from making political comment of any kind, because they "have a financial interest in a company benefiting from the likes of Monsanto"? Think about what you're saying. No one has d

1) Please don't preface your comment with a statement about people downmoding you. All that does is make me think, "well, the following opinion will probably be poorly thought out flamebait". It's also against the site guidelines. 2) There'

For most users, "your own hard drive" is a terrrible solution. They do not have a VPS that they use as a file intermediary (they don't even know what a VPS is), and they don't know how to keep backups, and if they did the backups would prob

It just goes to show that all advice and success stories are purely situational. It should reinforce the message that it's necessary to actually test whether adding a payment option (or anything else) really improves the situation or not.

This is awesome news. Massively advances the current state of the art in open source search. Definitely considering replacing our search backend at TwitchTV with this...

Hacker News is not generally a place for light humor; that's probably why you're being downvoted. Even more so, it's DEFINITELY not a place to complain about being downvoted. Complaints about being voted down earn a downvote from me, always

This kind of political bombast doesn't belong on Hacker News. Please don't drag us into a war of the Blues and the Greens.

Don't take this the wrong way, but ... really? I find that hard to believe. Pretty much all programming is in the short term unemployment producing, since pretty much all programming is automation. Automating a job means that no one does it

Seems to me that Google would of course want to buy Yahoo, they would be most able to monetize the search. The question is whether the government would allow it, due to antitrust.

It's important to keep in mind that the total amount of money going into early stage startups is still a rounding error on larger economic investment. Numbers that feel personally large, like "$40 million" are actually very small in economi

Reddit? Whatever became Google maps? Hotmail? Android? There are plenty of startups which have thrived after acquisition. There are also spectacular failures. M&A is risky, but can have a very high payoff.

I wish this wasn't a video. When someone gives a talk, rather than just posting the video, won't someone at least post the slides? Or better yet, a transcript?

The answer is simple: yes. If you find dealing with purchase support emotionally stressful, definitely outsource it. Just make sure you receive weekly reports so you can keep your eye on trends.
