I'm really sorry that is your takeaway: Re: money -- I tried very hard to avoid coming off that way. I am very discriminating in the kinds of jobs I take, and as I've regularly spoken about, it's not about the money. The mone

Fair question. There were a series of unforeseen circumstances that cut the runway tragically short. The stories you've probably read are missing a lot of info.

The suggestion isn't to introduce the lockout after the fact. In fact, what you're describing would be the exact thing that would happen in the metaphor -- acute withdrawal symptoms. The suggestion is to institute the lockout befo

There's an important piece of that quote that's missing here, which is that those people are likely to change. If you're at a position because you like the people, you're probably making a mistake. You can have a personal relationship with

FWIW, I didn't take it that way (Louisville-bashing). I get what you're saying, but I don't think it's as important that Louisville be the "best" in any one of those categories so much as "sufficiently good". It's like Maslow's hierarchy of

I'd have addressed this in the article, but it was getting too long already. Short answer is that many of the best opportunities I've received have arisen as results of relationships formed on the Internet, first, and maybe over a few beers

In stock ActiveRecord, you're not going to be able to join a derived table without dropping to SQL. :( Still, if you're looking to constrain results to only the latest, you could use the having clause (with some performance penalty).

Comments aren't available on the article, so a couple of quick clarifications here: Nitpicky, but ActiveRecord::Relation is not ARel. ARel is the relational algebra library that underpins ActiveRecord (>=3.0). See http://erniemiller.or
