So these various IPFS services are getting pushed to the front page of HN just because they use IPFS? Honestly, in most cases I do not see a use for decentralizing. In this case, the shortened URL still depends on a central host (bdaily.clu

Any EU citizen is protected by GDPR if the company is doing business in EU. Doesn't matter where the HQ is.

Kids come up with their own outside activities. Computer games are often built to appeal and take advantage of our brain circuits (sometimes purposefully, other times accidentally), to which kids are especially suspectible. Not that outside

This isn't about engineers. This is about businesses. Up until now there apparently hasn't been a business case for fast websites. Fast website costs a lot of money in development time. If a website loads fast enough , nobody wan

I had to stay at my parents' place for a few months where the bed has a soft mattress and I downgraded to the floor after a month because my back started hurting really bad. It took more than two weeks of back excercises and sleeping o

There are occasional inconsistencies. Just this week I fixed a small styling issue that differed between Firefox and Chrome. I develop for Firefox first as well.

I've started using VSCode for git push/pull/branch and staging. This is what I use git for 99% of the time anyways and since they are simple commands, triggering them from VSCode is faster than falling back to CLI. Staging&#x

My hospital has earplugs that you can just request. Not sure about sleeping masks - didn't ever see anyone with one, so I assume they don't have those to give out.

It would. I remember reading that something like this was enforced in some region (non-vaccinated kids couldn't go to school, I believe) and the vaccination rate jumped.

Interesting that in a way this might be a self-feeding cycle. People stop vaccinating, suddenly there are outbreaks in high-vaccination areas (really just smaller groups of people that do not vaccinate?), which then gets used as an argument

At $10k, car service mechanics were buying into random cryptocoins. Nobody understood them, everyone just wanted to get rich. A speculative asset, not a currency.

I remember looking at the price of Bitcoin when it was $23, $250 and $400. I didn't have any money, so I couldn't buy, but still fun to think about 10x-ing my current bank account. To be completely honest, even if I did have money

Bitcoin still has a $77B market cap. This is bigger than many well-known and long-living companies. Let's be real - Bitcoin still has a long way to drop.

I think a big problem in general with big corporates is that we are moving more in to the era where huge companies crush their competition just by having more data. The more data you have, the better user experience you can provide, killing

Implementation is key here. If a new method can be introduced which offers the same benefits of cash while being digital, open-source and on open hardware, I don't see a huge problem. Alas, such a solution would probably be extremely h

Ok... yet 99% of development is trying to write bug-free and readable code and do it pragmatically. Elixir gives you that plus a lot of goodies that are really hard to get in other languages. The creators of Erlang were really clever and in

From my use of Qubes: * RAM hit is pretty big. 16gb was pretty much necessary for any type of work. * CPU hit is decent. In Qubes, one of the applications I'm working on would build in 40s, on a "regular" OS it would take 20s
