While the other answer made me laugh, the reason is because gold is an element. Diamonds can be manufactured because they are made out carbon, and carbon and cheap and plentiful. You either have gold or you don't. Alchemy tried to conv

Oh man, I did something like this years ago, but for teenagers. It's super fun to make them. Just think maze + dice and you can come up with some cool stuff.

I left my startup last year. I didn't sell it, but had saved enough money to last me 3-5 years. It's enough to make me feel free to work on whatever is important to me. One of the unintuitive things I have struggled with is that n

The goal of doing something "more important" like solving world hunger or whatever should be to get more people able to concentrate on 1st world problems. It is good both for people to help others get up to first world, and for pe

ReQL for the win. It's so expressive, it's composable, I love it. I feel more confident that the m will be easy to scale if/when my app needs it. My code that interacts with the API feels cleaner.

Wait! Read "Drive" first. Open Source is a textbook example of people working for intrinsic motivation. While offering money might make that bug get fixed sooner, it very often reduces their drive to work on the open source projec

I'm sorry man. I was forced out of my first startup last year. It was very traumatic. It's so obvious what you should have done in hindsight but that doesn't help. I wish you the best if luck in the future.

I'll take a crack at my own over-generalization, albeit one I think is more useful. Adding strict types (Typescript!) to your code base gives you way more maintainability than testing. Do it first, then if you still needs tests, write them.

I strongly recommend AngularJS. Huge reduction in application code complexity. There are other good frameworks, like Ember, but the only one I wouldn't recommend is backbone. The only things that it has going for it are that it is easier to

I've tried stuff like this before, but it clutters your code pretty bad anyway, doesn't it? You have to do something like this: function myAsyncThing(cb) { var handleErrors = errHandler(cb) doSomethingElse(handleErrors

At least in node, you usually pass errors all the way back up the call chain. With normal callback style error handling, you have to put "if (err) return cb(err)" after each async call. It's crazy. With promises, you can attach an error han

Imagine if the language handled async code for you. So you could call an async function and it "returned" a value. But it still uses the event loop. See http://taskjs.org/ for how it could work in ES6.

When you don't have to share it with anyone, keeping a todo list in plain text really reduces the mental load of switching between your code and the list. It's easy to modify, make it look however you want. +1

I ported a project to TypeScript last week, and was very impressed with the language. I had rejected it out of hand in favor of coffeescript, but didn't realize how modern and expressive a type system they had created. Bug-catching gains we

Try AngularJS - No strong typing, of course, but the MVC separation is much cleaner (directives are awesome!), and it focuses on making things composable instead of a huge inheritance tree. Lots of fun. I totally agree overall, I felt like

I made this for a local user's group. It demonstrates how to do some "custom" stuff in Angular. It includes two custom directives, one of them is bound to a jQuery plugin. I also made it poll the server for realtime updates. I'm hoping it c
