Have you read The Emperor of all Maladies? The impression I got from the book was that we are finally beginning to understand the mechanisms behind specific cancers and create therapies to fix them. It seems like we are close to beating can

One thing to keep in mind: Haskell is different enough that it's almost as hard as learning to program the first time. To learn something that hard, you need to be exposed to it multiple times. You'll probably get overwhelmed even

I've tried this several times too and it has never worked well. I've been both employee and employer and I really wish people were more rational about this. Not only that but I think this is the key to fix the economy! Think about

So I know this isn't practical for most people, but I've been able to choose how many hours I work on my day job for a while. My suggestion is: if you are a key employee or have any kind if sway, negotiate a lower or dynamic hour

I use generics every day in typescript. I'm waiting to use go until it has them.

Typescript was worth the sacrifice for me and those I work with. The benefits easily outweigh those of coffee script. It is painful though at first.

Congrats! Using RethinkDB on several projects. I love the web interface, I love the query language, I love the features. Keep it up!

I was talking to a guy from Mongo at a conference and he said that Rethinkdb's sharding is as bad as Mongo's because it can't be done in realtime. Is this true? Do you think he meant that it would just be slow to move to shar

I've tried. It doesn't really work. Organizing is a "heads up" activity and trying to achieve flow while being available to answer questions and stuff is frustrating at best.

We just gave up living on the beach in the nicoya peninsula (samara) after 4 months. Bad internet access was a major part of that. The only options there were 3G and DSL. Max speeds were 3Mbs and the connection was unreliable. They are roll

One of the major problems with JavaScript has always been that there are too many options. I feel like TS reduces some, but it still lets people choose between a module pattern (AMD, CommonJS), and the traditional everything-in-the-global-s

I feel so productive in Typescript. I remember the feeling I got when I realized how powerful the type system in Haskell was, and how useful it was at catching mistakes. Every once in a while I read an article about Haskell and think I shou

That seems strange. What happens if two attribute directives ask for an isolate scope? Does it give them the same one, or just fail? I used isolate scopes in the article because I thought they were easier to understand, but I'm thinkin

Interesting. I started with $scope.$watch(attrs.myBinding) first, and switched it to isolate scopes after doing more research. I'd be interested to hear if someone who knows for sure could chime in as to what the best practice is and w

I think Typescript solves a lot of these problems. The type system is amazing, conversions are explicit. Syntax is slightly improved, built-in class system. The others I don't really mind: I like writing event-loop code over threads, a

We are mainly distributing the source code so people can learn from it, but I would be happy if they used the code or even the artwork to make a substantially different game. I just don't want someone to just slap a different name on i

I was planning on porting the engine to Javascript at some point, but maybe Lua would be better. The cool thing about JS is I could shuttle game logic between the server and the client easily.

For those of you that have tried the game: any feedback? Would you pay for an extended single player game, unlockable wizards with a custom special spell, or some kind of supporter program that gives you early access to a forum and betas?

We will eventually monitize this app through in app purchases, but decided to launch it open source. I'm not sure we got the license right, but it seems like we can provide the source as an example to the community without losing too m
