I'm afraid of the same outcome too. However I think many admins in the Fediverse are aware and I expected most servers to block any instance from Meta.

You cannot. Not with any software you didn't write or very carefully review. It's always about trust. In the case of your example, I think gorhill is a prime example of a trustworthy author. He has a very good track record, never

Why are the incentives for each provider to drive engagement? If I host a small server in the Fediverse, maybe I don't want/need engagement but happy users who appreciate a healthy community and are willing to pay a dollar a month

You can follow specific accounts from another server (say follow user@la.social from you@sf.social). However currently you cannot follow another server entierly (aka. local timeline). If you want both local timelines, you have to register t

Fair point. Elon seems to apply very different measures what counts as free speech though, depending on how much he likes it. If my work was criticised by my boss in public with objectively (very) wrong statements, I would criticize him pub

I think I could not work with a boss I couldn't have a disagreement with. Just beeing a yes-man is not health for you, your boss and your work. Nobody knows everything better. Criticism is hard to learn.

It's a common thing in the Fediverse that controversial moderation actions are discussed criticaly. People who don't like it then move onto another server. That's a feature. If I host a personal instance, it's good that

This is great, it shows one of the strengths of the Fediverse. Official bodies can participate in social media without being dependent on a foreign, for-profit company. And you can read updates with a lot of different applications, be it Ma

The difference between ActivityPub and Mastodon was already explained by others. If the popular solutions are too complex, maybe you want to take a look at https://microblog.pub , a relatively small and simple AP implementation d

There are plenty of instances who just block content that's illegal in their country. So you just could choose one of these.

Wow, I'm currently in Korea and I did not expect Naver to have projects like Lisp implementations at all. Their services (map, search, ...) are very common here, but from the outside it looked more like a boring company. Great write-up

I love this website. Their style tag literally is: <style> body { font-family:'Lucida Console', monospace } </style> Also look like a very cool project.

There's an add-on that opens a pop-up of your instace, so you can easily remote-follow someone on a different server. Agreed though that the UX must improve. Edit: here it is: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firef

At the time I wrote my comment, I read/skimmed to the greater part of the comments and the pattern was pretty clear. Maybe now there are more voices who beleive the market (tm) would've done it's part.

Thank you for the clarification. I didn't know that. In my experience, cleaning the lightning port with the end of a paperclip was never an issue (dust from my pocket liked the spot; always helped when charging got unreliable).
