Part of me wonders if children are exposed to this technology from a young age, will they experience this type of sickness at all? Like how our parents couldn't figure out a nintendo or can barely open an email, maybe our children will

Same. I get called heartless for it sometimes. But I think I'm emotionally stunted overall anyway.

I'm calling BS. Where's your source that Seattle has the highest average salary to cost of living?

What in the world are you on about? Why is your job going to be gone in 5 years, and why would you move to a more expensive city if it was?

oops. Thanks for calling me out on the semi-colon. I also forgot to pass response as an argument. I should be ashamed of myself. Must've been late.

If the person learned ES5 and was used to the tricky scoping and had got to C before ES6 became standard/popular, I could totally see the struggle there.

Ok, I don't disagree with that. So if they teach programmatic thinking in the ways you describe from a very young age, and they can apply it to realms outside software engineering, then it makes perfect sense to teach.

True, but I think a good chunk of the reason it is in such demand still is because it requires a high level of skill to be able to fill that demand. And I'm not sure that would change with exposure in schooling.

C is nearly inaccessible to me. It really is like the Latin of programming languages, insofar as JavaScript is the new English of programming languages which is the world I have been living in for some time now. Its like you can see the Lat

There's no way it is on the same level as literacy and basic arithmetic, at least not for decades if not longer. Literacy rates in the modern world are close to 100%, near the same can add and subtract. Programmatic thinking requires m

Back up what you're saying. Rails built a lot of extremely successful companies. It is not hard to scale or maintain if you are competent. If you scale beyond the capacity of Rails, you are Twitter and it's ok to move on. I think

You're correct, and people are being ridiculous for conflating the two. They are different things. If you want to get a job as a developer, a bootcamp is clearly the way to go as far as efficiency, cost, and pragmatism. Otherwise do a

It's not hard to believe at all. White flight to suburbs after the war is a pretty well known phenomenon that happened in every major city in the US.

I strongly agree. Kids are smarter and much more adaptable than the people developing this stuff seem to think. I don't understand why we aren't just exposing them to real programming languages from a very young age, like their na

That is a very good point. At my previous company, they had some struggles and laid off a bunch of marketing and random business people, but every single developer kept their job.

True, it's not uncommon, but JS is very significantly more popular. I"m sure you've seen this: http://stackoverflow.com/research/developer-survey-2016

Yeah Atom still has issues. I've had crashing problems on 4 year old Macs. But ST makes you pay $70. And also isn't open source. And more people know JS than Python to hack on it. And Github has a powerful marketing team and lots

My experience was exactly the same. Sinatra is for super tiny things. Rails is for most things.

There will be some major changes, but not as drastic as the Python version upgrade. I'd think the 4.2 book will be totally fine, and when 5 is out, just look at the changelog and start adding what you need from it.

I completely agree with you. But when it comes to developing web apps rapidly, Rails is about as close a silver bullet as you can get. If your entire purpose is to ship a product quick, you should be ignoring the "too much magic, too m
