Yes, assuming that regexes are actually being used to parse real-world languages like C++ is charmingly naive.

Because this plays on people's basic instinct to keep being fed meaningless, content-less pieces of the current "hot news". It's the bread and butter of modern media, and is not much different from what tabloid readers e

Can we please stop this? If anyone wants to follow this story, she can go to cnn.com or news.google.com; let's please leave HN for interesting technical content. This is truly becoming tiring.

Two common kinds of reactions by people who fail tech interviews at Google, Facebook, etc: 1. Think how to improve and practice for the next interview. 2. Bitch about how technical interviews are unfair, biased, miss the best people and ...

If you're right then it's a sad situation. I hate it when terms start morphing into unrelated interpretations by means of public drift.

I find the use of the term "Big Data" there bullshit. Even for the largest company like Walmart with 2 million employees - having some data about every one is hardly "big". Collect a whole deluge of data about each and y

This is a deep fallacy. The amount of science and technology behind Google's prevalence is absolutely huge. Google prevailed through better search results, not through execution and marketing.

Precisely. When a smaller provider goes from 1000 to 50 users, it's a "ZOMG 95% drop!" while only 950 users left, line noise for bigger providers. You're adding another example to my point. Naturally I didn't say th

I think Kahneman has a name for this common fallacy in this book -- it's the one wherein small samples always appear to change radically because they are... uhm... small.

The idea of UML makes sense - why not have a common graphical language for the things programmers want to describe to each other all the time? Sometimes I think the implementation is just wrong - because programmers are obviously voting wit

It seems that "pure web platform" is a foundational goal for Firefox OS; it's hard to see that changing in an update, but yeah, who knows.

IMHO relying solely on the web platform (HTML5, etc) for your OS is a mistake. I don't see Firefox OS succeed in more than niche markets - it's just purely worse than stock android in every respect.

Anyone's free to build that product. Of course, not anyone is capable of this - surely Google leverages immense computing power, complex software and its knowledge graph to do this analysis? You'd need to replicate all that in competition.
