I use server side generated HTML pages with progressive enhancement using JQuery (I prefere it to plain Javascript). Not complicated and works very well. Of course this is not popular/cool, though.

My opinion is to stick to plain SQL, but to use tools around if you like: query builders, transactions utilities, mappers. But no ORM for me, thank you. I have already given.

GraphQL is really nice for the client. But I have an hard time believing that this flexibility given to the client (over well defined REST endpoints for example) doesn't hardly impact the complexity of the queries to make to the data
