San Francisco already does this with cigarettes. An eighty five cent tax per pack is levied specifically for this purpose. So around 4.25 cents per cigarette. I don't see why this could not be applied to other problematic litter source

I rode a skateboard every day for 8 years, from high school through college and thought helmets where stupid. I got a Boosted board last year and after one ride bought my first helmet. Would never use it without one now.

Your right. Electrics can do that kind of speed but I was on a kick scooter and probably in more of a 3-4 x range and probably averaged 9mph after lights, pedestrians and the like are taken into account.

This exactly: bikes require planning and strategy and are not good for improvisational day-to-day things like you described. Bikes make walking easier but all other forms of travel like bus, train or taxi/uber/cars more difficult

I rode a non-electric kick scooter (Xootr) for three years working in downtown SF. It is by far the best form of transitional transport there is and superior to bikes for 99% of actual real world travel. It was easily 4-5 times faster than

I (lol)ed because "turbo" and "turbo-s" are a naming convention from their conventional cars that is fairly non-sensical on an electric car given that they don't have turbochargers. Eg. Macan < Macan S < Macan

I've driven nothing but BMW for the last decade and several of my friends now drive Teslas. I can't think of a single aspect other than subjective preference for rear-wheel drive bias where the BMW is any better than the Tesla. An

I lived in Noe Valley for 14 years in a rent controlled apartment that quadrupled in value during that time. I was eventually evicted with an owner move-in but during that period I saw all of the useful local businesses close and be replace

Kind of funny this came up. I used fizz-buzz in all my interviews for about two years (at first as a joke). Not a single new CS grad ever solved it in about a dozen interviews. The best I got was pseudo code like "if (i divisible by 5)

You nailed the description. At my school they had one Apple ][ and this infuriating rule that only kids who had an Apple computer at home could use it. Us poor kids had to use TRS-80 model 3s. I carried an anti-Apple grudge for years and ye

I agree. Nothing in a typical CS degree would help with this. Maybe if your Masters was specifically in this obscure part of the field. On the other hand, I used to work in the video game industry where degrees (used to be) relatively rare

During the 2017 Tubbs fire in Santa Rosa virtually all the stores in West Sonoma went cash only. I pulled out maybe 300 bucks when I drove up to check on my property and spent 3-4 days buying everything with cash. Came back to work with may

The difference is amazing. I have a 'newish' 2012 Yamaha and it doesn't even bother tell you what gear you are in. It's considered pointless information by many riders since they ALWAYS know. If you bemoan the direction

The Suunto 9 GPS watch claims up to 120 hours between charges depending on how you configure the GPS. It's mostly marketed to ultra-runners and hikers who need that kind of battery life.

Yeah, I went all-in on smart bulbs (Philips) and they are just impractical. I do however recommend dimmable dumb bulbs along with smart switches like Lutron. They are easy to install, "just-work" and give you 90% of what you need.

Thermostatic showers are starting to get more common. They have pressure and temp controls which automatically adjust the hot and cold water ratios to keep the temperature constant (even if someone turns on a sink or flushes a toilet).
