Yes. And that is a feature in my view. You should read some of Larry Lessig's work on this topic. If every law was enforced strictly to the letter, the world would be a very different place than it is now. You would get a ticket for go

I wouldn't write this off so quickly. The analog is Visa. What would ordinarily be a huge lawsuit is settled by a private commercial arbitration process--namely, a chargeback--in case of dispute. Courts are tremendously expensive and b

Ok, two questions. 1. What are the "social or political consequences" of this study? Can you explain those? Or perhaps clarify the asserted "collective damage"? 2. How do you weigh the benefits of better understanding ag

Sorry you were triggered... On a more serious note, I don't think personal sensibility is a good reason not to perform an experiment, or publish something. The main test should be, "is it true"? And, "What does the evide

I think you've gotta acknowledge that a lot of this stuff is just fashion. Anyone can buy a pair of pants. Look beyond the functionality to understand why people do things. It can be social signaling, wanting to be part of a crowd, or

Very true. I'm just tired of being called the bad guy. We might not see eye-to-eye on this issue. I think it's about 90% the fault of those who've lived here for decades and 10% the fault of new people like me (7 years here s

I think there's some truth to this, but the big story is simpler. Prices have doubled in the past 5 years. Because of Prop 13, if you've been an owner through this, you just stay where you are. Then the whole question becomes maki

That's true. I think Oakland has something going for it, though. SF increasingly feels like a museum: the whole place is so preservation-focused and static. Whereas Oakland has always seen itself as a place where anyone can live and do

Your view on this broadly aligns with mine (33-year old, live in Oakland). We bought a cheap (for the area, about 670k) condo just off of BART. It's a pure consumption expense in that I expect to get 1-2% appreciation/year while c

I think this is a common misconception people have, that that's the choice. Go to Paris. SF needs Parisian-level density. This means six-story buildings, a few on each block. That's easily 10x the density of single-family homes, w
