IMHO, dislike of masks is built into us as a social species that place significant value on facial expressions. Makes sense from an evolutionary game theory perspective for societies to discourage them. Easy to find research showing the det

I've seen quite a number of sensor companies doing it for a couple of years. Their sensor uses a statistical algorithm, it's "AI"! Really, it's hard to say it's not AI. Glad to see an open source project gainin

Those elevated death rates were only for about two months. Also the better metric would be years-of-life-lost from a societal perspective. It'd be unfortunate but much less impactful on society if the excess deaths were 76 year olds wi

Some of the new IoT protocols build on ipv6 natively. The resource overhead is minimal for modern mcus. Dropping dhcp and arp can save a lot of resources too. Also I have mcus with more ram than my first pc.

Yeah, I posted about that algorithm on Nim Lang forum. Someone used deepseek to create a Nim version [1]. It seems the constant factor overhead is quite large. Well presuming deepseek implemented it correctly. There's obvious easy perf

Anyone else think this could be used with distributed hash tables to dramatically speed up searching or building them? Maybe more exoticly to LLMs and lookup tables. A clever algorithm like this should be applicable in a lot of more special

Exactly, the authors get to eschew the formalism required in papers. Often the core ideas of research are simple in themselves and the real complexity lies in formally proving the results. Also, I'd not be surprised if someone alread

I suspect the UK government would back down way before Apple. People aren’t politically active as those of years pass, but brick their iPhones you’d have a riot.

Oh idea of "vast patterns" in Conway's game of life seems like a great metaphor for LLM transformers. Explaining hidden markov chains with some extras or whatnot to a layman doesn't give a good mental image but is what I

Awesome, that’s a handy link. I made a PR to Nim’s standard libraries async to use that (or a similar flag) MacOS. It massively improved latency, great for UIs. I created an issue for another async system showing them how to do it. They clo

Fascinating, and I’ve been working on a native UI project I call Figuro for a couple of years now (1) that’s built on the idea of simple nodes. It’s surprising how similar to HTML it’s becoming. I feel like it's sorta an inverse of the

The Jank creator talking with folks at CERN about integrating with their C++ codebase makes sense too. Clasp was originally used to do some molecular simulation if memory recalls.

Thanks, good take. Especially if some of the pieces are still being added. In my humble opinion, you can handle many cases like serialization better with 'compileTime' or comptime features though I'm partial to macros. Especi

Sorta, but while Erlang/Elixir isolates actors in normal APIs, a erlang process can access most anything using “system calls”. Same for RPCs to other nodes. You can do almost anything a local process can for better or worse.

To be fair to our field fields like construction have literal millennia of history and development to figure out the best patterns. Even then it’s still evolving. It’s crazy to see what we’re capable of building now vs even 15 years ago.

Perhaps to get the basics sure, but to go through all the edge cases and parameter tuning and failure modes will easily fill a small book. That's not even going into modifying Kalman filters for non-linear systems.

That one is one of my favorite resources on Kalman filters. Deriving it from Bayesian principles make it much more intuitive. It also makes adapting or modifying the filters easier to understand. Using Jupyter notebooks is really great too.

Well LLM generated code doesn't often work for non-trivial code or cases that aren't re-hashed a million times like fizzbuzz. So I find it almost always requires going through the code to understand it in order to find "oh th
