Don't forget that Ive languished for a long time at Apple until Steve talent scouted him and promoted him up after he returned.

This is an interesting point. I actually use my netbook for lots more than stuff on the net. I pretty much use it as an ultra portable laptop. I don't expect awesome performance for it, but hey, it was $270 so I get what I pay for. It can r

The funny thing is, if I spent time running around finding something with comparable features at a lower price (which you're perfectly capable of doing yourself through a wide variety of search engines we have these days), somebody would pr

I go into any discussions about Apple products here knowing that I'll burn a bunch of karma -- but I do so anyway because I like to fantasize that I'm bringing some kind of interesting discussion to the table anyway. The fundamentalism of

Oh no, I lost that karma way before I whined about it. I knew as soon as I posted that it's just a karma burning exercise. Any contrary (or slightly contrary) post in a discussion about Apple is pretty much treated like leprosy. I know that

Oh, I totally agree, I wouldn't bring a mouse along with an 11" MBA. Just making the point how well this type of form factor works in small spaces.

The 11" is about the same size as a netbook, which I can tell you from experience works fantastic in a coach seat. Even with room for a mouse!

I thought about this this past week when I had to go to the local uni's CS department for something. I peeked into a half dozen classrooms, lots of laptops, mostly dells, a handful of Toshibas, less than 10 MacBooks...the most I saw in one

BTW, even though it shows only -4 on my posts, I've lost far more than 12 points of karma. PG appears to actually be counting the downvotes these days even if he's only showing -4. I think I just bled away about 25 points last night because

It's not entirely dissimilar to the package management stuff found in lots of Linux distros -- or perhaps even Valve's Steam. Except Apple can wrap a payment system around it and monetize it. If they provide the same kind of value through i

Looking at how I just burned 8 points of karma (and probably now more with this post), I guess I should have just done like everybody else and parroted the new marketing talking points and pretended to debate the merit of 11 inches or 13 in

I wish I knew. I do know when the drive got wrecked, it was after sitting in my carry on after a 16 hour plane ride overseas. I don't even take it out anymore I'm so scared about the fragility of it. I have to say this, overall it looks bet

Well...33% fewer then. I mean really, didn't Jobs explicitly say that they would not release a device in this form factor? If this isn't Apple's take on a netbook I don't know what is. http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2358514,00.asp A

Congratulations Apple! You've finally put a netbook on the market and figured out how to charge 3x for it by removing all of the USB ports and putting a better screen in it!

Man you must treat your MBP pretty delicately. My MPB looks like it got in a fight with a baseball bat and an angle grinder, and I carried it around in a padded laptop backpack for only a year. Thank goodness I almost never put disks in the

It's probably less than the 50% bump in revenue, and likely cheaper than building it the first time since you can reuse tons of assets...(of course provided that it's 50% of something sufficient). Let's be realistic about what we're talking

Looking at it another way, most companies would sell one of their vice presidents to figure out a way to get 50% more business. This could be an easy route to increasing revenue.

I don't disagree with you to a point. But Microsoft already pretty much owns the IDE space on PCs. Outside of Eclipse and maybe the authoring tools for Flash, there really isn't much else out there. Anti-virus is even more interesting becau

One of the things Jobs did when he returned was cut all the distracting crap and refocus the company on what it was good at. One of the things that's always mystified me is the vast vast software and hardware product lineup that Microsoft

Reddit is always going through slow phases. I bet those probably coincide with growth phases and they run rather lean (or so I've heard). I'd be more worried if they started getting very fast, that might mean their user base is shrinking

One thing I beat on my development staff about is that computers are fast, stupid fast. As in billions of operations per second fast. With rare exception, if I do an operation on something in memory, it shouldn't take any more than 1/2
