There are a ton of these out there nowadays. A lot of them are OK, but I use: http://github.com/olivierverdier/zsh-git-prompt

WARNING: this rant might sound like I hate you, but I'm really trying to help you. First of all I am a programmer. I understand your frustration at not being able to build stuff yourself. A lot of people (MBA students, engineering students)

Aaron, how did you go about learning about programming languages implementation? I'm mostly interested if you went theory (e.g. reading a PL book) down to implementation (e.g. reading the ruby source code) or the other way around?

It took me a while, but now one of two things happen during my naps: 1) I don't ever fall asleep. So it's mostly just resting and relaxing with my eyes closed. 2) I fall asleep 10 minutes into the 30 minutes and wake exactly one minute befo

It's probably because you wake up when you're in REM ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rapid_eye_movement_sleep ). The key is to wake up before you hit REM. I wake up after 30 minutes because I usually will hit REM if I nap for longer.

We obviously won't force people to take naps, but I want an atmosphere where napping (or just resting ) is encouraged and not looked down upon. And you're right, sometimes I can't fall asleep during my naps, but that's OK for me. Then I ju

Lose 45 minutes (30 min nap + 15 min setup/teardown) for oh so much more energy for the rest of the day? It might not work out for you, but try it for a week!

A friend and I have this running agreement that if we ever do a startup together, we will force all employees to take a nap after lunch. As a college student, I understand how useful naps are. Students live in short bursts of concentration

You are exactly right. Making usability and user design into a science is difficult because we'd be trying to model the human mind, which is, well, pretty much impossible. For example, in the information retrieval community, companies like

I don't care how awesome or successful this guy is; his slides are impossible to go through. Great stuff too. Don't do a start up if: (1) you love your kids or (2) you love your spouse.

I don't think Python is the "de facto" language at Google. They also use Java extensively. And anyways, who cares what Google uses? The OP isn't trying to get a job at Google, he's just trying to get some work done.

Python and Matlab are two different beasts, and it's not really fair to compare both of them side-by-side. If you want to Get Stuff Done (tm), then I say go ahead and use Matlab. I've used it for computer vision projects in the past, and it

I gave up on Digg not because of features of lack of features or power users gaming stories. I gave up because the community turned south (I don't remember when, but it was several years ago) and became a picture/video/-posting site. I used

It's great that we're using iPads and technology to make textbooks interactive (and cheaper!), but shiny toys cannot fix a deeply broken system. The "boring" part of learning is always going to be there. You are always going to lose passion

You are right that it's easy to misuse "other cultures," but my comment comes from my experiences of living in different countries. I am not saying that one way of thought is better than the other. I just wanted people to understand that th

I didn't mean to offend. I've worked with Indians who were punctual. In fact, I don't recall ever working with one who was not. I think parties are bit different, though. My point was to compare cultures, not to put down one or the other.

Interestingly, this is mostly an American (and a also a Western) problem. In most of the world (South America, Middle East, Africa, East Asia, etc), "on time" ranges anywhere between 30 minutes to 3 hours later. We grade our personal produc
