The ease of use has to approach at least Skype level (and even then you'll exclude a wide swath of users who don't know how Skype works). There's an old joke about Unix to the effect of "it's not user unfriendly; it

I don't use the same password on other sites, but do use the same email (not the one on my HN profile) in a lot of other places. I'm still not "less angry" at Adobe. Probably irrationally so, since data leaks can happen

No argument here. It's really a shame and, if you think about it, email is the least evolved method of electronic communication for the masses in every day use (with the exception of possibly IRC). BBM would have been the ideal email r

I'll make a slight addendum: Most people have an email address if they frolic online, however I rarely meet people who prefer to conduct communications over it. Of course, they need one for FB or Twitter either way, but... Either the

"usually" Is a bit harsh IMO. It can be a lot of times, but then that's a symptom of a much bigger problem. It's hint, more often than not, that the environment is toxic and it may be time to dust off your CV.

Well, I don't do much of #3 & #4, but do plenty of #1 & #2. I count on the community to vet the loudness of private time-wasters. And so public watering holes become more palatable.

That's speculation. I've seen servers get compromised due to FTP problems, SSH misconfiguration, unpatched Apache vulnerabilities, third-party stats monitoring software with 0-days and even SQL injection. Defacement (I consider ma

I was formerly on solar before moving to an apartment. Hence the "I've used an old eMachines PC... in the past ." Besides that, the power supply barely made past 200W, which is basically 2 incandescent bulbs.

That's indeed overkill ;) I've used an old eMachines PC with a couple of network cards and a switch in the past. An order of magnitude better than the Linksys router from my ISP it replaced. Also never had to reboot until I moved.

I've found pfSense really shines on old PC hardware since the embedded boxes I've tried it on tend to slow a bit. Something with a still functioning HD and at least 256Mb memory does pretty well with it.

That's terrible. What will this to morale of people already working there? I know most folks are infatuated with appearances, but surely actual productivity and output should trump employees who "look good".

I like this idea. If there's some benefactor to the Open Source community (or even if they pass along a collection) for the VID, that could even work. They just need to properly implement the standard and the VID can effectively be the

Your definition of "clone" needs a bit of adjusting, methinks. Also, your history of posting one-sentence replies and dismissals isn't terribly productive.

I like it. Nice and clean though, I'm not too big a fan of "flat", it gets the job done without too much fluff. For a developer strapped for time, something simple to slap on the back (no pun intended) definitely works. Tinse

This is sarcasm, I'm guessing. The suggestion being RMS wasn't a crackpot at all. We were (well, most of us were) just naïve and didn't think much of his advice back then.
