I had these issues before for plenty of things, it just hurts the most when it's something non-essential. I've had outtages because silly system updates to slack broke and took things down. I run metrics and such out through logs

This is especially easy if you can shutdown environments that are only used for dev/staging tasks. With 168 hours in a week - how many hours do those things need to be running? I run a little tool for Heroku to make it easy to do thi

I've used bog oak for a bunch of things, it behaves about the same as white oak to me - so I doubt it would be great for tone wood uses.

I'm somewhat obsessed in woodworking but got into it the same way I was drawn to programming - just making things. Like most things if you expect the first thing you make to be any good it'll be a hard road.

I continue to use Heroku for a few applications. Since the last few application I have worked on are B2B apps they don't get much usage in the off-hours. I wrote a heroku-addon[1] for scaling down on nights/weekends so the cost is

The reaction is interesting and seems semi-valid but only because it is a car. If someone charged a phone I doubt anyone would care.

I enjoy arts and crafts style furniture, I only consider true breadboard ends if they are mortise and tenon jointed on. When doing this you can design for the movement of the wood. Also quartersawn white oak is most used, a wood that does n

People are often killed riding on sidewalks, I avoid riding on them because they are very dangerous wherever there is a driveway - cars move to the edge of the street without expecting a vehicle moving at 15mph+ on the sidewalk.

I commute often by bicycle (and motorcycle) and wear a gopro (camera) on the helmets. Hopefully someone never needs to watch the footage, but it makes me feel better. It does not stop the rage-passers.

I have always found it interesting how people think things like this are unique to their line of work. Estimating is difficult in any non-trivial operation. Think of roads, buildings, bridges... almost any new product.

This should not be an issue if you avoid mass-assignment with dumping all params, which is a security vulnerability anyway. If you do something like: @user = User.new(params[:user].slice(:name)) It will be safer, and avoid the problem.

I can see the bikes on GT campus from my desk all day. As someone who likes to ride a bike I think the idea is neat, but I wonder who actually uses them..? Maybe they do well, but it seems they just sit there all day. Plus are people suppos

It is pretty common in any form of art or photography to use color balance to convey a mood. The eye is pretty good at dealing with these things, does the author get frightened and angry when the setting sun makes things appear orange?

I don't understand, you ate nothing but juice and assume that is no sugar? It would be a lot of fructose, which would be glucose after getting through the liver. Fruit and vegetables contains very little fat or protein (most of them anyway)

I am not sure why the economist is producing articles about flat tappet cam engines. It is well known that new engine oils contain lower amounts of ZDDP, it is known to harm catalytic converters. It is also not as necessary in roller engine

I read this a lot how people say caching should be a last resort, but it really depends on what you are doing. Many times caching can be the easiest thing to implement on certain things. I have done sites that have a signup page that have a

Could possibly be a waste of power depending on the design. If you replaced all outlets with something like this that may have another transformer plus the power regulation circuitry your outlets would be burning power 24/7 (not just when y
