CrashPlan doesn't require that you use their service. The client software (which is free) is also server software, and you can backup to your own server(s).

Interestingly, it looks like they used their AMA on Reddit specifically to announce this [1]. Kind of a neat idea. 1) Implement a long-requested feature. 2) Do AMA on Reddit and wait for inevitable "when are we getting {featu

I'm wondering this, too. Does MelbourneIT have some sort of service or reputation that makes it attractive to large companies like Twitter or NYTimes?

With my iPhone 5 on VZW, I can SIP REGISTER just fine with Bria (a SIP client) running on the phone itself. I can make a call, too (using FreeSwitch). I cannot, however, do any SIP REGISTERs with my MBP tethered to my phone. So the headline

I've already seen a number of apps in the Mac App Store that take this exact approach. Two examples off the top of my head: Textual, an IRC client [1, 2] Blink, a SIP client [3, 4]...this is pretty difficult to compile, though... -----

You also lose one of EC2's only advantage: per hour billing. This isn't true. Reserved instances still use per hour billing, just at a discounted rate.

The one place I'd like to see FreeBSD run better is on Amazon EC2. Last I looked at the effort, it was subverting the VM mode used for Windows EC2 instances to boot FreeBSD. Unfortunately, this means paying the Windows price for instances.

As zaphoyd said, Verizon doesn't default to IPv6. Dual-stack devices should be using the Happy Eyeballs [1,2] algorithm to choose whether to use IPv4 or IPv6. [1] http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc6555 [2] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Happ

Not necessary. The 5ghz band has a lot more channels available (21 in the US), and all of those are 20mhz wide with no overlap. You would have to live in an extremely dense apartment building to start to run into interference issues. http:
