They do, by buying the next version. On the other side of that coin is making the next version better enough that people will upgrade. For security/bug fixes, yes, there’s a better incentive for fixes in SaaS, but then again, if you’re

Sure, Ill happily pay for the next version of my password manager as well…as long as I buy a license instead of renting it. But I truly won’t rent a note taking app. Overall JetBrains’ model of “subscription with fallback license” seems the

As a vim user with only superficial emacs experience, does emacs have something like the remote file system setup that VS Code with the ssh extension provides? Basically local editor with local response time, but file system is external? I

Apple’s BSD stuff is mostly open sourced by them though: https://opensource.apple.com/releases/ It used to be even more comprehensive, which enabled projects like OpenDarwin to exist, but yes upstream can benefit to at

For JS perhaps, PyCharm has a few tricks up its sleeve that I haven’t quite seen in VS Code, especially wrt debugger support. That said, the Python IDE market has been sadly underfed for surprisingly long.

VS Code is good, but not THAT good. It has unparalleled remote editing with the SSH extension, but the actual editor is beaten by Sublime. I can buy that people like it, I don’t dislike it, but it also isn’t sliced bread. There’s peers in t

Doesn’t the fact that Sony and Apple put FreeBSD-derivatives into more end users hands than Linux ever reached (depending on how you view Android) count as being successful?

Not politics, but idiotic crap like tidepod-challenges and general promotion of unhealthy/stupid crap. That’s how you unravel a generation while making sure your own population gets healthy exercise videos.

Wrong comparison, try “violent movies” or “porn” instead of alcohol, then you’re still within first amendment territory. Unless we go from “money is speech” to “alcohol loosens lips, ergo it is speech”…

A lot of the complaints here can be solved by knowing that C-x e will drop you from bash into emacs to edit your current line, which then gives you any bells and whistles you’ve configured in emacs. Bonus is that this is generally available

It’s more that English isn’t necessarily their native language, at least if born deaf. ASL is not signed English, it’s roots are French, and as far as I understand that wouldn’t make French their native language either. ASL is their native

Protects it against what? GPL is itself a way of using the system against itself, with an end goal of replacing said system. I guess If copyright seized to exist you could take GPL code and modify it without sharing back, but the users woul

I read the above as a way of saying that names may not necessarily be a good proxy for race specifically. Not as a comment on whether discrimination based on names is right or wrong. You are of course entirely right that it shouldn’t matter

The reason I wrote why I did, was that my understanding of “defund the police” is that it’s not actually intended as abolitionism. If that is the case, then it’s not a suitable slogan at all for reformism.

Carrying guns is a lot less common, even among criminals, hence escalation dynamics become easier. Not really feasible to put the 2. Amendment Pandora’s box back together to get similar logistics in the US I fear.
