I own the book The Ruins of Detroit to which this article refers, and live in the greater Metro Detroit area. Lot's of photos in the book look posed. An american flag, clean and shiny in the middle of an old dusty scenery, or a basketball

I like the project. Let me give you some background on how I handle books, maybe it helps you with your work. I read around 800-1000 pages a month, spend a lot of time searching for books to read next, and find it hard on amazon or anywher

In my opinion this is what is holding us back in the grand scheme of things: Only do things which are profitable . Let's just step back for a second and consider the following questions: Do we have the raw materials to start space coloni

In recent month it feels more and more like a choke-hold from google. I can't help it, and it drives me to alternatives like bing, ff or skype. It feels like google is preparing a big move in 2011. It wants more data ... it always does. Gma

Maybe I would pay Google $4.99 per month to use all it's products (not just mail) without Ad's and high privacy settings. However, I'm not sure if Google wants my money. Life is easy with an ad-based service.

There is one thing that I really miss on that box, and I think it's a major oversight from Apple. I haven't seen a jailbreak that would give me that right now. a clock It's a very simple thing, but nowhere in the entire UI you will find a c

I don't think this is google's fault. I think it is still too hard to turn a book into an ebook. Google did a fine job of digitizing a bunch of library title, but that wont do it. They have to share a spread that technology (make it cheap).

Well, if you think Windows 7 is so bad, go and ask yourself why you did not install one of the bazillion Linux on your grandma's Dell. Oh right! Because you cannot leave the house anymore if you would do so.

Please help me out here. I never understood why people always argue that Chromium is open source. Sure, Chromium is, but not Google Chrome. From what I understand, the changes for Chrome from the Chromium source are not obvious. It is not

I don't think this is it. Here is why: Almost all Apple products have a "build in" expiration date. And that is the lifetime of the batteries. Maybe someone could proof me wrong and affirm if iPhone Gen 1 batteries are not good anymore. Bu

People on this site might forget other facts people consider when buying a computer. I would have jumped on the apple bandwaggon years ago, if only I could buy one with Windows. I know about bootcamp, I have several unix machines, but for m

Although those are impressive numbers, the comparison does not really make much sense. XP is 9 years old. Ubuntu(10) a couple of weeks afaik. And for a real benchmark there should be information about what kind of initialization XP does (vi

In Facebook I can delete advertising using the X-button, and radioselect a reason (inappropriate, uninteresting, ...). Do you get feedback on those actions, or does facebook use that only internal?

I'm curious to see a Chrome screenshot on those wm settings. Obviously you try to minimize the the os memory footprint, so most of the UI enhancements are not really targeted for you.

Facebook could allow users to "Opt-in" an email export. If I'm not "Opt-in", only my name would be exported by me and my friends. We all know that Opt-in is like "does not exist", but they could at least say they are open. edit: They could

"Most" of the concerns ... ... are "likely" safe. It's a tiny line between FUD and alertness. I prefer people bring this stuff up every now and then to remind all of us to never stop questioning things.

This brings up an idea for TrueCrypt. Why not have two passwords: "foo" and "bar". If I type in "foo", I get my stuff. If I type in "bar", it may selfdestruct the data, but at least it will show a different content. So I create a 100GB cont
