I don't know why it would be considered more difficult to use canvas/dom for rendering + JS. I've been working on a simple JS (well, CoffeeScript really) game, and it hasn't been very difficult at all. But then again, I do lot of JS and nev

Seems like if you were moving in some way, or perhaps standing, you're less likely to realize there was a quake. Reminds me of the monkey business illusion. We're really good at ignoring information our senses feed to us.

Since everyone is telling HN about whether they felt the earthquake or not, I thought I might point out the feeling the earthquake is dependent on not just whether the ground shook in your area, but other factors as well. In particular, the

OT, but you remind me of a joke a math professor made in a Calculus III class: A vector has both magnitude and direction, not to be confused with our university newsletter ( The Vector ), which has neither.

Is it bothering anyone else that the graphs seem to indicate performance regressions with newer versions of Firefox/Chrome?

While this is an issue, it's a pretty minor one from my own (limited) experience using CoffeeScript. It's extremely easy to relate the JS errors to your CS code, since the JS generated is so readable. It's just a little tedious to have to t

Having trouble registering here: https://sandbox.mobileworks.com/accounts/register/ It just ends up refreshing the page, with the form still filled in (except password fields).

Well, I'd be surprised too if it was just due to PCWorld, but it's more than that. The guardian and the telegraph, and many other mainstream news outlets have gotten wind of this story: http://www.google.com/search?client=opera&rls=en&

Except that it at least prevents the discussion devolving into a long chain of jokes, like you see on Reddit, and generally keeps this kind of thing to a minimum overall on HN. There's a place for those chains of jokes, and that's mostly on

This critique is just a bit unfair to Scheme, given his first couple examples being used to show how cumbersome it is compared to Miranda. Normally you'd have a fold function defined and use that instead: (define (sum x) (fold + 0 x))

Then the issue becomes determining what abstractions are "necessary". The line is very blurry, and there is plenty of room for a range of reasonable positions on this matter. While there may be some objective truth about which abstractions

Thanks for the pointer to fountain codes. Though, since I'm working on a networked game that works over websockets, this is basically something I wouldn't bother with since websockets are TCP, not UDP, and as such they are guaranteed delive

Nice. I had $5k worth of gold for when it was selling for $10/billion, but then the price crashed since I was slow and supply had gone up while I had stopped playing. Oh well.

This type of flying machine is called an ornithopter in general, and many hobbyists have made their own. You can even buy toy ornithopters I believe. However, most cannot be controlled, and those that can probably can't be maneuvered as wel

There's another solution to this, besides the ones mentioned by others in this thread, which someone can probably do themselves. Just look at the design of the teleprompter: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Teleprompter_schematic.svg Err
