Here's what I think everyone can agree with: we don't want conversations on HN that amount to pissing contests between fans of different celebrity figures. There is little insight to be had here.

Another way to save app-switching sanity: Get 9 or 10 work spaces. Set up command+number keyboard shortcuts to switch to that number. Use a single app on every workspace. Scales well to 10 or so apps open simultaneously. Basically, I config

Khan Academy has a pretty amazing live environment inside the browser: http://khanacademy.org/cs It's been tested to work pretty well with middle school children, so it seems right up your alley. John Resig (creator of jQuery) made it hap

I always used terminal vim when on Linux, but after I got a macbook (from work - I'd never buy one), I'm pretty happy with MacVim. Give it a shot. Pretty much everything works out of the box as with the terminal version, you just get a few

That snark is not warranted. The point is also not so relevant: we're talking about cultural acceptability, and popular literature/movies are a reflection of that to a large extent. For the record, that particular love story cliche did actu

Automate it in a test environment that simulates production as closely as possible. Once the automated software updates work flawlessly under various conditions, use that in production.

You would feel differently if you were an avid vim/emacs user. There's no reason you can't combine the interactivity of Light Table with the key bindings from other text editors. The combination may prove more powerful, at least for those w

This makes a lot of sense, and is worth experimenting. The comment/reply box should have some simple placeholder text, along the lines of: Don't be a dick.

A prototypal language can easily simulate classical OOP. The converse is not true. Take a look at how CoffeeScript implements classes. There are also a plethora of libraries that provide various class/inheritance models, with whatever taste

Type coercion is crazy, if for no reason other than making the behavior of certain code harder to predict. That said, I don't think it's a major stumbling block, and once you learn to avoid relying on it there's no problem. There are plen

The GP means internal temperature. 41°C would be a ridiculously (fatally?) high fever. BTW, as a teen I remember playing out in the sun at a good 52°C. Don't think I died :)

Space for 160 employees doesn't mean they'll have 160.. They just have room to grow a bit. 40 is a lot of employees, but with their funding they can afford it, and it may just be essential, we can't really know from the outside looking in.

Just start hustling? If you bring results, they can't just tell you to go away now, can they? Edit: Interesting that I got a downvote for saying the equivalent of the other comments here. I should figure out how to be clearer.

Who says it isn't already being done? I'm pretty damn sure Google and Bing do some sort of topic modeling (LDA, LSA or something else) that basically does the same thing - though the exact method is not the same. Watching the TED talk, he s

This has been a long time coming, but AWS has consistently been improving their service (as long as you can ignore the particularly bad reliability as of late). It's telling that they have only enabled this for a huge (quadruple extra large

I would say that we don't mind because we understand that there are many features on "modern browsers" that are not available on IE 9 and below, but yet are web standards (ok, not all the time). Hackers also tend not to use IE, so that also

Clients can be hacked anyways, whether compiled or not. This has always been true. The only way to make a game secure is to keep all the game logic and data server-side. This means clients only act as dumb terminals: they provide input to t
