And those x86 are only still usable because M1 hasn’t been out long enough for the new software, that needs the speed to be “useable”, to be written.

This class’s version of RISC-V only implements of subset of all the possible instructions (which of course is totally appropriate) and it’s missing modern concepts (like out of order execution) which are also out of scope for an introductor

For me probably the coolest thing about RISC-V is it has version with a simple enough architecture that students can code it in a quarter, and it's also in the zeitgeist in a way MIPS never was. It seems like we've been doing toy

There are plenty of constraints in the server markets. The primary ones are economic.

Here is a Forbes article (do “normal” people read Forbes?) that says to run apps in Catalina one will need permission from Apple. It even anticipated this problem with the server. Sure, it doesn’t mention sockets but remember this is for n

Is this really a knock on Apple though? It’s not like all this is up to them. Personally I want MATLAB support but Apple doesn’t get to dictate Mathworks schedule.

I see how it worked. That measurement uses the 2013 technique published by Henry Wong. I think it’s probably a reasonable estimate of the instruction window length but to say that’s the same as the buffer size is making a number of archit

That's not obvious at all. The memory hierarchy is very different in an Apple SOC compared to a typical PC architecture. For example, I don't think there is the equivalent of a system level cache in a PC. https://www
