UNIX based. I would presume that most DB's are installed on UNIX based systems so most of the people who are developing tools for them are going to already be on such systems.

That is genious. Absolute genious. There are likely to be less problems on a smaller codebase and when there are its much easier to recommend a rewrite of 1k than 10k
