You could start with remote job (Elance/Odesk) - I see African developers there from time to time (Kenya comes to mind at least). No paperwork needed to get started, you'll get real experience and some good contacts/referenc

Having hung around HN and Reddit for a while, I know that if someone tells you NOT to look up something - you really should not. As in, you're better off not looking it up, NSFL tag exists for a reason. Plus, patio11 is well-known here

Well, strictly speaking, starred messages are included in OPML bundle that you can download. Even if you don't get complete replacement for GReader, you can still extract information from that file, it's just JSON.

Not really. I liked how PyCon organizers behaved during this whole thing - so good publicity for them, they showed they can handle such situations well and react to them sensibly.

To make things worse, Google's support for their own APIs is pretty weak - I had some bad experiences with them. Calendar API wasn't the worst - okay, I didn't get any response from Google guys on a bug I ran into, but they eventually fixed
