My single favorite thing about CoffeeScript seems tiny, but makes a huge difference: the chainable existential operator. It's gotten to the point where I keep trying to use it in Ruby and getting annoyed that it's not there. Rails at least

I think that this is a stretch of the term "purely functional". The relevant property is actually immutability , which looks nice. While immutability and functional programming often go together, they aren't the same thing.

I don't sense any dark connotation for the word. I've seen it used most often in a pretty value-neutral way to describe any group of people living outside their country of origin. These days most diaspora are composed of economic emigrants

Yeah, the whole Stack Overflow family of websites blocks EC2. Other examples include Yelp and Bank of America.

What annoys the crap out of me isn't objective C, it's XCode. This looks worth it just to have an XCode-free toolchain.

Since I have a bunch of EC2 nodes anyway, I route my own traffic through one of them when I want a VPN (mostly for a little extra safety on untrusted wifi). It works great until you realize how much of the web blocks access from EC2.

The thing is: school is nothing like the real world. It teaches you how to deal with school. School is a very weird, twisted little society where none of the work has any real point, there's no source of purpose other than pure social app

Save money. Invest it well. That's it. Most people in technology are earning significantly more than the median income in their region. If you can learn to keep your spending near median, you end up with a sizable cushion. If you can save 1

The advent of social networking can actually help make this stuff easier for normal people. The hardest part is managing a web of trust. If you can automate building your web of trust on top of existing social network connections, you can g

Because the actual law as written excludes someone not born in America from becoming president. Obama was born in Hawaii, so he passes. Musk was born in South Africa, so he doesn't. It would take a constitutional amendment to change the law

You can't talk about sensible naming without also talking about scope. When a variable is only in scope for five lines, it's perfectly reasonable to give it a really short name.

The only reason this whole debate exists is that there are lots of us who love programming, and would be doing lots of it whether or not it paid. This naturally makes 501 types uneasy, because it leads to unfavorable comparisons.
