Oh dear :( Sorry to see sandstorm go. I attribute the failure to many reasons: 1. The UI was very sloppy. For the user, one had to learn many new concepts (what is a webkey? why do apps not work on mobile?) 2. New app developer model meant

Having seen the issue trackers of many closed source SaaS products, let me tell you that this is hardly anything. If anything, it's great that all this is in the open and I can assess and prepare myself in terms of sysadministration ac

There are many other players in this space - yunohost.org, cloudron.io etc. https://github.com/Kickball/awesome-selfhosted has a better list

If you use docker to deploy, see cloudron.io. You can install custom apps and it takes care of encrypted backups to s3. And automates lets encrypt as well.

We are a company of 10 on GitLab CE (We selfhost via the Cloudron). Costs us ~60 a month, so it's already cheap for us. We also have a bunch of other apps on it which saves us more money.

All the random domain sha1 like domain names are confusing. I also dislike that many of the apps have missing features compared to the actual apps and they get embedded in iframes. I understand all these are done for security. Related: htt

Yes, the risk was taken when the company was formed. I didn't mean that it was taken after the company was formed. I am a long time ownCloud use. iirc, it was even announced on planetkde first.

I don't doubt that. I am sure priorities can be set by one man. But the article talks about he is the main driver for simplicity in the products. Which is an design/engineering outcome. I think the simplicity of apple products is

A leader is only as good as his people. And this is yet another article doing disservice to all the people working at Apple. Steve might have given the direction but he was hardly responsible for every idea that came out of Apple. The logic

I feel sad for ownCloud and Nextcloud. ownCloud has a brand and this fork dilutes it. It will be on everyone's mind especially since the founder has left to create a competitor. For Nextcloud, unless they can explicitly state why this

While async and await is a welcome change, callback hell is mostly a symptom of the programmer's own doing. It is possible to have callback hell in any async programming stack/framework. In C++, you usually don't write anony
