I used to be big on LilyPond, but in the end I concluded that my musical brain works much more effortlessly when there's an actual graphical score in front of it. (Maybe I'd feel differently if I had one of those keyboardist/

Thank you article, parent, GP. You've saved me just in time from never having read the Deref documentation properly. I have some code to delete before I make this mistake again.

Yes, that's a good point, that in well-moderated environments you can call them out effectively. And silent majority, indeed. Too bad the term "silent majority" has been co-opted by the loudest and most misguided minority.

As far as I can tell there's no way to get proper pinch-to-zoom in Xorg, so I'm going with Wayland for now. It is totally insane that this is a thing for a user to think about.

And here! I switched from Mac to a Framework with Ubuntu/GNOME six months ago. Switched to Fedora/KDE Plasma this week and it's been so much better--everything is so much more discoverable. That said, Dolphin just got a bug w

My experience with pitch memory is nearly identical to yours (but only 34 years playing cello, not 35). Absolute (perfect) pitch really does seem to be a whole different thing neurally, akin to (and perhaps actually related to) the differen

Lots of good responses to this question. The most plausible solution being pushed right now is the one advocated by Lee Drutman and Fix Our House, proportional representation via large multi-member districts: https://www.fixourho

Second Strogatz, does an amazing job linking the math to the visual intuition--probably less rigorous than some texts, but the perfect balance for an intro. Took an amazing course based on that book with Charlie Doering, who has sadly passe

Not the worst example I've heard. In 2016 the Haitian president canceled daylight savings by decree two days before the changeover. I was flying out of the country the morning after the change, and had a really hard time explaining to

Interesting! Presumably last 12 measures if you're playing a 12-bar blues, etc. Big downside is you're stuck playing to a metronome, which would be enough for me to skip it, but it depends on the kind of music you're playing.

The thing that did for me is realizing that people on opposite sides of the United States can't play music together if it requires any rhythmic coordination, even with a true speed-of-light signal with no other sources of latency.

Looks like it was only 3 Strads and 3 new violins, which were selected from a pool of 15 submitted by violinmakers. So only really good violins. (But also a very small sample.) 8 players chose a Strad as their favorite, so it's not as

I worry that the takeaway for people that only read clickbait headlines about the 2012 Stradivarius study was: expert violinists can't tell the difference between cheap and expensive violins. All the new violins in that study were high
