I'm not sure what you're asking. As a software developer, supporting negative leading isn't hard, but as an end user (as I was in the example above) that's no help if the software developer hasn't done the work.

I typeset a scanned and ocred copy of an old book. It used a moderately common font except with extremely narrow line spacing. None of the tools I had supported a line spacing narrower than the spacing chosen by the font designer, so I ha

In a similar vein, the Duke of Westminster was asked if he had any advice for young entrepreneurs wanting to match his success. He replied: > Make sure they have an ancestor who was a very close friend of William the Conqueror

That was terrible advice. It's basically "play the white man", which is a notorious racist trope in the UK. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Play_the_white_man

If this is true, then the former students will lose their lawsuits. Surely it is better for this to be aired in court than for the government to claim sovereign immunity.

I was really impressed with the UK vaccine booking system. A text message from the doctor directed me to an online booking form. This was an incredibly simple html form-based thing. The first screen asks for your DOB (to check you'r

It's not really about fetishising ancient production methods. Cheese made with unpasteurised milk tastes different and, in many people's opinion, better.

I once tried to register a business using an emoticon as the company name. I read all the guidelines and relevant legislation and, as far as I could see, there was no rule prohibiting it. The automated system accepted it, but it was rejec

You're not wrong. But the person concerned is notoriously litigious, and their employer has a legal duty to protect them from harassment. (Because, AFAIK, they are British and employed in the UK by reddit.) So reddit has no good cho

I don't doubt the story, but if the expiry year was in the wrong field, why did the payment go through? Did 1Password fill in the year twice? That would be a huge bug. Or will a fraud detection system ignore the missing year if every

At places I've worked in the UK it is asymmetrical. The employer has to give three months' notice but the employee only has to give one month's. It is intended as an employee benefit, and it is. I've never been asked

Surely you meant to say: > but the fact that others don’t allows them to micropay for a lot of content with their time. I'm not objecting. I do the same. But in what sense are you paying? I'm sure I'm not.

How much class did you have? My first year at university had three hours of tutorials and ten hours of optional lectures per week. Subsequent years had less. There was plenty of time.

This isn't new. Back in 1992 you had two choices for DPI in Windows 3.1 but many applications couldn't cope with the larger setting. I used it anyway because 1024x768 on a 14" CRT was unreadable with regular fonts.

A URL has another huge disadvantage: a URL is the address of a thing, not the thing it is pointing to in itself. The thing it is pointing to can change. If you paid $70 million for a URL pointing to a Beeple artwork, you might be upset if
