Let's say the D represents the duration between when you typed that code, and when you got feedback informally at the watercooler. Pair programming, when it's working well, is just lim(D -> 0) :)

Exactly. You can follow SRP, use clean constructors and do it by hand. An IoC container is a nice /mechanical/ helper to do the wire up for you. I really dislike that the majority (all?) of the javaland IoC containers work with a
