I have for a while now thought that the ethical source licenses are at least trying to do exactly what open source licenses are trying to do, just within a human rights framework. The SSPL and other source available licenses on the other ha

More than 3-4 hours of TV is considered unhealthy, and that number has been constant since the 90s. Why isn't there such a number for phones and computers? Productivity took the limits away, for the worse I feel.

Opt-in user targeting could still be fine (like offline loyalty programs), and it would be healthier than the current norm of opt-out through ad-blockers.

There is nothing stopping Google or Facebook from offering content-based advertising to advertisers, publishers and users--sidestepping any issues with multiple small ad deals. A regulator could demand it if they wanted, and together publis

I have the same reservation about ever more tracking increasing conversion, but I would guess in reality the equilibrium price might come as more people use adblockers vs those who would turn them off if they could be assured they weren

Super great to see new designs with RISC-V keeping up with tech, the BL602 and ESP32-C3 are currently available though, and I've been working with the Pinenut for a side project. I hope more RPi-like BL702 boards become more widely ava

Thomas/Alito get wrong that computer programs are an expression in every form, not invention in any way. Patent law does this too I'd reckon. They then refuse to do the work it takes to determine fair use in this field, which Alsu

Exactly this, the same protection that memers have in editing content (but not copying the full implementation), software engineers now have too thanks to fair use.

That's exactly why fair use exists. A teacher showing a movie in class is fair use, editing a clip for memes is fair use, making backups is fair use. APIs are copyrightable, but independent implementations are fair use, this is an outr

I think people filling up drives and then making space as needed happens more often than one might think. It's probably most common on phones/tablets, but even I only do remote backups once a partition is 80% or so full, and at ti

Over-provisioning is doable since more 15" laptops and motherboards are starting to have 2 NVMe slots, and you always could've gotten additional PCIe->NVMe slots for a motherboard. If you're still after endurance, low late

There should be a benchmark for filling a drive 100%, then doing 4K random writes. I'm pretty sure this would kill any MLC/TLC/QLC drive at a few billion writes or less. It wouldn't kill Optane, which would probably rema

I disagree, it's perfectly fine for a developer to say no, I can't be in a closed ecosystem for these reasons like Purism stated. We need developers and users to choose open ecosystems.
