Not really. Building your parking lot for peak demand has a very, very high opportunity cost. You could instead surround your business with other uses (like housing) resulting in a greater increase in steady-state business traffic that mo

The underlying reason is racism. White people dislike the idea of a social system that benefits everybody, because that would include the blacks. This is even true of desperately poor white people, who are very numerous, but would rather de

Looking at the code I’d be surprised if this is anywhere near as fast as a simple equivalent written in C++ (which wouldn’t be as pessimistic with the register saving, in an opt build) or even compared to bozohttpd.

Yeah I don't know if there's all that many craft beers _in_ Oakland, but the state is just crawling with them.

Same experience in Oakland. It has never been easier to find Japanese whiskey. In fact all kinds of spirits have been having a renaissance around here; you can get anything from anywhere including many local spirits. That’s on top of the cr

How does all of this behave when you have an eGPU and a Thunderbolt-attached storage device? In what order do you install those peripherals? Who loses when the CPU wants access to GPU and storage at the same time?

Also familiar: monitoring frontend is tragic-comic with no units and inscrutable data. It’s cute that the author thinks the internal version must be a lot better! On the other hand, the article doesn’t mention Stackdriver Profiler, which ha

Coin Metrics says the transaction fee stands at $7.67 which is astronomical. ETH is a bit lower at $1.39 but that is still far far higher than most payment instruments.

That's what I am getting at. To pervert the old saying, you can't eat a Bitcoin. Presumably what this person wants is some instrument that can be exchanged for, say, 50 kilos of rice. Are Bitcoin and Ethereum really the best su

Yep, seen that. I worked on a system where the company did not really want a reimplementation but they destaffed a project in one site and reconstituted it with all new people at another site. The new people decided to rewrite from scratch.

Unfortunately pollution is not easily reversed. It's easy to say that if someone pollutes your water you'll sue them, but in reality it's unlikely that you'll be able to recoup your damages; pollution is often irreversi

The best thing about a sovereign seastead is how any properly equipped Real County(tm) will roll up in a boat and just blow it away. It’s like barbarian cities in Civ, essentially.

The conflation of SQL with consistency in this blog post is dumb. Yes Google offers SQL on Spanner but the query execution is built atop lower level Spanner primitives that are also available to developers and are similar to Bigtable concep
