In Oakland (where Bird and Lime dumped all their junk after SF told them off) I have seen lots of stripped scooters. Also it’s trivial to hotwire a Bird, and everyone in Oakland seemingly knows how to do it.

Yes, assuming that the government massively subsidizes your driving by socializing the carbon externality and providing you with a free mandatory parking space at your origin and destination then it’s “cheaper” to drive.

A car would get a big fat “poor” on every point of that evaluation. And yet, we allow our city to be totally overrun with them! I certainly hope that SFMTA is feverishly working to apply these standards to car companies. No car should be al

I guess you’re just overlooking cars? People leave their cars all over SF all day every day.

I don't think you really understand the architecture of the machine. EPYC looks on paper like it has a large L3 cache, but it consists of separate L3 caches per "core complex" of which there are two per die and four dies per

A 2-socket AMD setup has the same NUMA topology as an 8-socket Intel machine, and because of that the performance is terrible on many workloads.

Do we need a quarter century to make that happen? California built Shasta Dam in 8 years with a population 7 times smaller than today's and with early Industrial Age technology. How long could it possibly take to install some pumps a

I feel the same way about nearly everything in California. For example the first phase of the HSR project, which will serve pretty much no purpose whatsoever, is planned for 2029 which means realistically 2035, which might not even be in m

Efficiency is pretty much irrelevant when the land in question is worthless. You just cover more land. With current utility-scale equipment you need only 300000 acres of PV to generate all power demanded in California today.

Yeah I don’t see what AMD has to be glad about here. Their new CPUs are not remotely competitive with Intel on realistic workloads, mainly because their cache and TLB architecture is already poor. Intel had to introduce more TLB misses to f

Did you mean no commercial stations? Because I can think of lots of listener-supported jazz stations that are mainstream, definitely not smooth. KCSM in my local area, for instance.

I guess you meant outside of google? Google's logs analysis is often done in "Lingo" which stands for Logs In Go. I assure you that logs analysis is very CPU bound. http://www.unofficialgoogledatascience.com/

There's still plenty of execution risk ahead for Waymo and a narrow opportunity for a very focused competitor to catch up to their technology. I don't think Uber is that competitor and I don't think that competitor exists, b

The reason it is "unbelievably bad" is because it's not machine-readable. It's a PDF that comes out of FrameMaker for crying out loud. Some parts of it are not even human-readable, such as this garbled chart in ORM 3.7
