The high price was primary due to them trying to offset the high RD cost vs the actual hardware cost. Google might be able to sell it cheaper if they can get ROI with other applications. Update: hardware cost about $400 interesting analysis

That's a big deal for single page apps (SPA) that get bigger than a couple pages and result in large initial downloads of the client side code. Having personally used these templates for getting a Typescript app with KO components run

I tried it out with a signal generator (wav file) and an audio amplifier cranked way up, it felt like AC and made some muscles twitch but nothing compared to mechanical vagal maneuvers.
