On the mac, spotify often fails to play songs for me as well. The problem is an intersection of weird bugs and their lack of support for low volumes. When Spotify plays an ad and you turn the volume down too low, they pause the ad and show

Isn't this similar to what happened with opengl (industry consortium, no clear driver) vs directx (ms owns; highly motivated; actually pretty decent a couple revs in)? Carmack seems to now find DirectX superior [1]. Note I'm not a graphic

To be fair: (1) Finding the molecular conformation is only a tiny piece of the puzzle. (2) If we were to discover a vaccine for HIV, many countries such as India, Thailand, Brazil, and China would instantly break any necessary patents. Thi

I've read it somewhere; sorry, I don't have a reference to hand. You can read about Ellison berating employees and screaming at them in a great book by Charles Ferguson called "High Stakes, No Prisoners". It's a wonderful accounting of bui

Amazon has 33k employees [1], estimated; they can figure it out. Also, I'm positive there's at least one company selling such information -- thousands of other retailers, most much smaller and much less technically sophisticated than Amazo

Low class? That's sexist bullshit. There's plenty of men that speak exactly the same way -- starting with Larry Ellison, and go read about his behavior sometime -- yet don't get the same opprobrium. It's because she's a woman.

I hate articles like this. (1) When did aspiring to a good life become wrong? The article seems to sympathize with Dharmesh Shah of Hubspot who whines about having to pay devs a middle class wage. (2) Since I've seen this with the dude fro

Well, $2k is probably on the low side for bills and food. Transport: $1k+/mo, roughly: $250 to park your car at home, $250 at work, $350 car payment, insurance, gas, etc. Plus $100 for public transport for your partner, plus $80 for rando

$10K/mo before taxes == $6300/mo after taxes, at least in SF. If you have a family and either rent a 2 bedroom or have a mortgage, you'll spend $2500+ on shelter. Etc etc. It doesn't go as far as you'd think.
