Yeah, the whole article reads very...coroprate-y. I'm not sure if I'm happy with it, but I haven't used Gnome in multiple years, so my opinion doesn't really matter here. I do however, wish that Gnome foundation remains

Agree. I think the core of the problem was that we didn't get a discussion before implementation. We got an implementation and then were given chance to discuss upon. So when the discussion pointed out flaws, since so much work was alr

By the way things are, I doubt they'll be stable in next release either. There were some pretty fancy things in last year's NixCon so devs might just push on that. But the problem is, many many new shiny things are so comingles wi

I agree on every single point. I'd love to make GuixSD my permanent home. But, Guix is not just Nix with better language. It comes with its own baggage elsewhere. Guix repository has way wayy fewer packages. Some of the most common one

Alternative to what others have said, you can use your config to build a custom bootable ISO and use it to setup your new system. Comes very handy if you can't guarantee nice network for setup.

I've been smitten by NixOS ever since I first tried it 2 years ago. Its the first carefree experience I've had with my system. As a side note, this result includes first tiny contributions of mine! That said, I really hope the com

Yes, and original comment addresses that. In theory WinMerge binary can contain malware. But WinMerge authors have a proven track record against that and they are transparent about working of their application enough through their source. M

How is that a good feature? Just because something is not commonly used it stops being good? When most software was proprietary and FLOSS was nascent, MS argued that FLOSS was bad, was that right? Conversely, just because something is used

Well, the "Smart" screen says that WinMerge and KDiff3 are malwares. Naturally I trust both of them more than so called SmartScreen because unlike Smartscreen, I can inspect their code. Yes, the binaries can contain malware, but t

To expand on this, the opposite has been true. IIUC Firefox telemetry is enabled for all binary downloads from Mozilla website by default, but every distdo package manager worth its salt has it disabled. So the system is actually working as

Haskell, php and Lisp gave me a chuckle in that how much the stereotypes are held up. Although it might just be the feedback loop. Overall very well written, lots of references and fair disclosure. Fun little project, I might want to repeat

IDEA has wicked refactoring abilities. If I rename a class, it will find all the functions whith input param of this class and ask to rename them as well. It can identify class references from plain strings. This is useful at least in Java

Fair enough, I should explain. When I'm reading or writing code for Java,or C I am reading or writing code. My brain parses all the visible characters and safely ignores the invisible whitespace. Indentation is just better readability.

I haven't used LSPs too much, but I'll say they work to a good degree. IDEA is hyper optimized for their target languages, from what I know Intellij builds custom engines for every language, so at least in some aspects (large scal

Agreed. Even more of a reason to not make + into add and - into subtr. I've thought about how the verbosity can be avoided, but at certain level of complexity, it is better to have long descriptive names, but I'm not experienced e

As someone who hated the whitespace in python and hates it even more in yaml, please don't. The only significance whitespace should have is its presence or absence, beyong that, its a pain for human readability.

The reason music got saved is, eventually, all signal gets transferred over two cables. It is simply not possible to gate it. Video is much more complicated.

If I remember, telegram.me links would not be identified as URLs requiring manual copy-paste. They didn't have link previews back then. The messages are E2EE only in transit. They can always tweak clients for things like this.

From the article, I could not understand if it is default or easily selectable. The post and the theme link explains how to create a theme, but not if the dark one shown is available in stock installation.
