Ask someone anywhere in the lower-middle range who's sent a kid (moreso boy than girl) to college recently how they feel about whether we're there or not.

This is a common piece of spam copy-pasted onto basically any threads involving gender dynamics. It's not worth replying to, and least of all upvoting. Don't feed the trolls.

More likely than not people start yelling loudly about who's advertising their skills better. In the end not enough businesses and institutions are equipped to accurately assess skill. So rather than being hired based on skill, what yo

Men (and many women) would strike and refuse to go to work in the first place, because they know they have absolutely no job real security, and run the risk of being shot at work purely because of their gender. So, it wouldn't solve th

A type system is a tool. No tool makes anything better without actually using it. Saying that applying a type system to an incorrect program doesn't make it correct without refactoring is like saying hanging a painting with nails doesn

I disagree. Unit and feature testing are vastly overrated for what they do, and their current use is faddishly subscribed to in a seemingly cult like fashion. Unit tests are excellent for testing non-stateful behavior of code. That is, they

C#'s var keyword tells the compiler to infer the type. It still has a statically determined type so that shouldn't interfere with type-polymorphic functions such as serialization routines...

This. If you're writing code before having at least thought out a preliminary solution, you're doing it wrong. Types let you codify your idea, and then make sure your implementation aligns with it as you write it.

To expand a little bit: I have found at least anecdotally that the benefits of a strong, rich type system are multiplicative with other features, not additive. For example, types in Java are largely a nuisance. The type system lacks facilit

This article misses the point of what a type system brings to the table. The key benefit isn't catching errors. The benefits are largely discoverability, enabling better tooling, improving the number of optimizations compilers can make

Agreed. It seems less likely that Snowden is necessarily a brilliant/genius level hacker, and more likely that the permissions/logging/granularity/etc were screwed. For example (hypothetically), you're asking for tr

So, on the topic of the (not provided) "data hiding" and now this... if it's just because of users using secure search, is this really as big of a travesty or a problem as its made out to be? To me it looks like SEO/Mark

Amusingly, I had almost this exact experience in middle school. I'd figured out that the barcodes used on our school lunch cards were just plaintext for our ID numbers. With minor cooperation from a nice lunchlady, I discovered that there w

I think there's a tendency to underestimate the cost of large scale projects. Even a relatively 'simple' enterprise site can run a few thousand dollars, just to cover a single designer and programmer's wages. Factor in the cost of the hirin
