Cross compiling is more for supporting more platforms with minimal or no code changes. If you develop applications that will always just run on x86, developing and testing them on another platform doesn't make much sense in my opinion.

Still, wouldn't you want to test it on the same architecture? It's fine if you just compile on a server but then you can as well have a cheap client with only a web interface.

Even Android phones have logistic problems with this. Many of them use similar vendors. Creating a phone with vastly different size and components means a lot more sourcing and upfront cost.

The problem is that with modern fridges energy consumption is already low enough that steering that through smart meters probably isn't worth the investment. Large companies could use that, esp with electric heating. But in residential

Or their data centers are just full. Teams had a tremendous growth, so did their O365 suite and probably also Azure itself. At some point even the largest vendors run out of servers.

Maybe it's the demand side? With remote work, the intensity of usage went up at least in our company as we rely more on written communication. At the same time, some people will use the time to start side projects or get into programmi

That's my biggest problem with Google maps for cycling in London. They somehow always want to send me via Regent's Canal even if it's farther. I get that there are no cars and it's theoretically a nice route, but way too

The fancy big tech or tech startup jobs might be concentrated in CA and NY, overall jobs aren't. Nearly all companies have developers, so does every region with large companies.

I guess that depends what your base line is. While SV is over-represented here, it's only a tiny fraction of the global developer market. The salary of many remote jobs could exceed local levels for the vast majority while being signif

Pure speculation, but maybe you have to look around or negotiate to find remote work? Those who tend to do that probably also get better salaries than those that stick with one job for very long or don't compare much when looking for j

In pretty much every country you need a director or similar who's a resident of that country. There are agencies doing that for you but that's not cheap and not without risk. Running a company without residence is usually not wort

From experience, (1) isn't really a problem. If payments bounce they do so within a few days due to insufficient funds or fraudulent use. After that, refunds are extremely rare. Esp. since most European countries have easy systems for

I love transferwise and use their service for several currencies but it shows how hard it is to get right. E.g. EU customers in the US get a bank account on the name of Transferwise with you as the beneficiary. Even larger invoicing systems

I don't think it's scummy. Revenues are usually measured on an annual basis, fees for many subscriptions come monthly. I believe this gives a good idea on monthly expenses for a business of a certain size.

It might also not only be age. Sailors on the Roosevelt are likely to be less obese than average, more fit, maybe lower rates of smokers (not sure) and certainly lower rates of other pre-existing conditions. That all puts them in lower risk

Facebook doesn't live off views, they live off ad spend. Unless people continue to use it more when they have to go back to work, I don't believe FB will profit here.

> Sweden is considered a relatively good outcome in Europe so far I don't think that's true. Germany or Austria might be good outcomes. Sweden had few measures in place but their death rate is far higher than most neighbours.

UK was the country that first wanted to isolate the elderly and get young people infected and immune. The current case count is a reflection of that rather than the lockdown which came afterwards.
