I work in an FAANG where the director in charge takes people like this and just forces them to work from home. WFH is normally not allowed so you have to be in the exceptional tier to be offered it, and that gives you the flexibility to man

Yup. That explains what happened to both Alan Turing and Donald Trump.

That guidance, often framed in religious terms, is a core tool with which sociopaths in power neuter their opponents.

The article is about the ethical/philosophical implications of having dead performers holographically “brought to life,” so Hatsune Miku isn’t really relevant to the topic.

I like robotic conversations at work because my work is not important to me, and I don’t want to bring my “full self” to work. I like to get in, do my shit, conduct communication in a formalized manner, and get out in 6 hours and go do stuf

Yeah - a vigilante commits violent crimes to punish crimes that go unpunished by the authorities. This is... a person using above board methods to expose junk science.

I forget where I read about a very early and simple attack on Amazon Alexas. Some people knew that their neighbors were going on a long vacation. So they just shouted into their house orders for the Alexa through the front door. They ordere

This is highly rational behavior for hired CEOs — you’re there for 5-10 years and paid based on stock price, so it’s in your best interest to sell shoddy products under the venerable brand name in the highest quantities possible, and cash o

Outcome 3 is that the SEC revokes your broker-dealer license for violation of Regulation T and your entire company disappears into a puff of smoke. You become one more company “disappeared” by the law, like Accenture or Aereo.

That’s if you expect to be on the hook for downside risk. If you’re a teenager willing to go bankrupt (and face criminal charges) if the bet goes south then you should maximize your risk.

Yes, what I’m saying is that 3 days bereavement for the death of a child is pathologically inhumane, even if it is depressingly common. It’s not “naive” to call out terrible things, even when they’ve been so around that we have come to thin

Exactly. I had 30 days bereavement leave when my mother died but decided to return to work after a week. It was a world of difference from just having the week.

Sure, but the bereavement leave for a child should be much more than 8 weeks. And it costs so little to provide since it is relatively rare in the developed world.

A personal example is that where I live, Uber has basically exterminated yellow cabs. So if your phone is dead and you can’t get an Uber, you’ve got no chance of flagging a yellow cab like you could do ten years ago. So if you have to get s

I think sadly (or deliberately) this has been framed as murder vs suicide. Either way, it’s deliberate... Osama Bin Laden would have never been allowed to commit suicide in his cell. Someone looked the other way on purpose.
