First off, as someone who has spent many hours trying to use dat, I agree 100% with your assessment. I have been using dat command line tool to p2p synchronize files on a LAN (and also over the internet) for a year or two now. The latest ve

Let's say a food manufacturer finds a chemical that is tasteless but addictive and starts adding it to all their food. Would you also argue that this is very clearly food the people want to consume?

This seems like an obvious assumption to make, but it isnt always true. It is easier to see why if you are measuring a single value multiple times in order to get a more accurate estimate of the true value. In that case your "model&quo

It is absolutely not as simple as clear mechincal fact. See for example the rat park experiment [1]. There is also the case of huge numbers of people addicted to morphine during the Vietnam War, who upon arriving back home to families and s

What are you referring to when you mention hydro cut stone? A quick google shows gemstone cutting, small subtractive milling of gargoyles and cutting/etching of thin decorative stone. Are you talking about a quarrying process? I'v

I wonder if paying out the dividend on a weekly or monthly interval might help with this some degree. Only getting paid at the end of the year tax refund style feels a lot more like a bonus than a reliable paycheck.

Even at a neutral tax, carbon use should go down since it becomes more expensive than non-carbon alternatives. There two obvious knobs: 1) tax rate: $/ton of CO2 2) wealth distribution: 100% goes to state vs 100% goes back to populatio

Not necessarily. Tax carbon heavily and then redistribute the tax equally among all citizens. Anyone using above average carbon net pays into the system, anyone using below average gets a net payout. Then markets, our most advanced coordina

I tend to agree with this line of thinking, but I wonder if banning advertising wont have similar difficulties. There will be more sneaky product placement, anonymous donations to podcasters who tend to promote certain products/beliefs

I like the approach Cory Doctorow has been advocating. Make it not illegal to scrape facebook/google/etc. Facebook got its start by being interoperable with Myspace. Now they wont let anyone do the same to them.

It may still be helpful to delay the counting of these votes to further the narrative "look, Trump won by a large margin the first day, then all these mail in votes come in a week later and the winner is now Biden? Obvious mail fraud!&

How about a carbon tax which once collected is redistributed evenly amongst everyone. This way people who use the most carbon will be paying the people who use the least carbon for the priviledge. It also prices in the externality through t

It doesnt have to be a conscious process for everyone. It could be that google just prefers to show you pages with these patterns even if most pages dont. Or could be writers that dont do this quit because no one reads them.

I heard of this first with respect to a carbon tax, but one solution is to evenly redistribute the collected tax among all citizens. This way, the market can internalize the externality while keeping the average person no poorer.
