While my knee-jerk reaction is to blame bad backup practices, that's not what I believe happened here. Not entirely at least. The setup is too complex to easily verify and restore. Yes, a bespoke box is annoying and "inelegant&quo

On the other hand, we're in the multi gigahertz, multi gagabyte era, there's almost no excuse for loading times except bloated libraries and not giving a damn about performance.

Yeah, I should have figured that HN would probably be a place where it'd be okay to write kernal, but then again, someone might point out the spelling difference between the penguin one and the chicken lips one :P

So, I like Linux and I love my C64, but.. Linux are for computers too primitive to come with their own kernel and.... the C64 comes with a kernel and shell right from the factory :P

Depends what good code is to you. Good code is different depending on your sense of aesthetics, but also it's purpose. Good code for an enterprise-life-blood type of system is terrible code for a "let's check if this is an id

The fact that there's a cartridge compatibility list indicates that this is not a real machine, but an emulator which does not even do a good job of emulating the cartridge ports. I was so close. This is the same disappointment as the

Random stuff, mostly my "projects" whatever they may be, both as a way to share what I enjoy doing with the world (the minuscule subset that is actually on the WWW), and as a way to remember the details about what I've done.

I read the article, and I see nowhere that the author states that the title of their review is the title of the book. However, whatever was being reviewed seemed interesting enough to ask here. So, except for your arrogant way of telling me

My approach is very different, firstly: Storage is local, not on some cloud service. My music is stored on my fileserver, along with my other files. Even uncompressed PCM is cheap enough to store that I see no good reason to convert to a le

Very interesting! Now we need to make a translator for the DOS version of 3Dfx Glide 1 & 2 and drivers for Windows 95, 98 and 2000 ^_^ I'm getting on with the 3DFx one this weekend if all goes well.

I wanted ZIF sockets for three reasons things: I want to be able to swap out chips (and their fake replacements) easily to test compatibility and stuff like that. The chance of breaking the pins off of the vintage chips is very real, especi

You can do it with a linear supply, a common mod that people do is actually to replace the lm7805 regulator with a pin compatible switching replacement for less power draw and heat generation. I think ripple-free is by 1982 standards ;)
