I'm really glad to see that they're building a new UI from scratch - this has a lot of potential. I wish that there was a chance in hell that this would light a fire under Apple's QuickTime team, but they seem to be stuck moving at a snail'

Yes, VLC's reading of DVDs is much more permissive. I've never figured out what the deal is with Apple's DVD reading software. Perian is hampered in many places by the limitations of QuickTime itself. Apple hasn't yet provided any API for Q

The GPL school is definitely in the passive-aggressive means of control camp. They don't want freedom unless it's their brand of free. Disclaimer: IANAL. That said, I think part of the reason to enforce cases like this is that if this cla

I'm still not sold on Github being the actual solution here -I think that it happens to be where a great deal of functional communities have formed, but I've also seen a ton of projects that are a total disaster. When an "upstream" owner

Thank you, you just described what's bugged me about wave for a long time, I never really could put it into words why I liked EtherPad more, I just knew that I did.

There's also an extension for emacs that implements this: http://www.emacswiki.org/emacs/Rudel It says it even works with Gobby.

As stated by others though, if you're on a dynamic IP connection it's possible (likely, even) that the setting won't stick forever.

Makes sense to have telephone support - I mean, if your DNS is hosed, then web-based support won't do you much good.

Adium also has a pretty insane way of matching URLs, that's been in use (and growing all the while) since 2004. http://hg.adium.im/adium-1.4/file/542aa252713b/Frameworks/Au... is the lexing part, and then there are other files in the same

Post some recent instructions if you get it working? I had numerous problems with networking (which I solved) and swap/RAM overhead (which I didn't) when I tried installing to my Eee 900.

Most professional brass players I know personally try and hang onto an instrument for a decade or more. I know people in multiple major orchestras, and they all have instruments they love and won't part with, rather than cycling through har

What he means by all apps being first class is that it's really a dogfooded API and platform. Apple is pretty far from the "we build our own apps in the same sandbox you do" state that Android is in. As an example: Twidroid (and most othe

Give so little back? Really ? libdispatch was something purely in-house. They're giving it away. Same for launchd, although other groups inexplicably feel a need to recreate it from scratch. They're employing major contributors to LLVM/c

The difference to me has been that really great programming languages cause me to not notice my use of design patterns, because they become trivial. For example, Factories are basically nonexistent in idiomatic Python, because they're ess

I just saw an absolutely fantastic talk at C4 about MacRuby. It'll be tons faster than RubyCocoa, because there's no bridging, and it compiles to native code. You can even do AOT compilation and distribute a native binary!

Mercurial and Git currently have no support for checking out part of the tree. It's been designed a couple of times for Mercurial, but never implemented. (Git people: please correct me if that's changed since I looked last, a cursory Google

That's commit-time ACLs. I'm talking about read ACLs. Some companies aren't comfortable with giving people total access to code, even code that logically would sit in a single git repository.

The big failing of DVCSen is that you lose the ability to do fine-grained ACLs on code. For example, if a company wants to restrict access to certain parts of their codebase (eg, megacorp brings in contractors, they should see only the one

It's also inaccurate: GitHub doesn't offer the largest free storage quota. That's still Google Code, which offers 1024 mb/project, rather than 300 mb/user.
